I use 3/8" diameter linear shaft for my flash steamer big end it's a case hardened precision ground shaft.

The stockist I bought from some years ago no longer can supply it in short lengths only metric sizes available.

Have look on the web with no success for small quantities about 12" long any suggestions who to contact.

Search Ebay for old dot-matrix printers?

What about dowel pins, Only short length but surely long enough for a big end.

These are hard as witches tits but have a soft sore so they are not brittle.

Might even be able to get the size you want without machining to length ?

Thanks John for that link another path to go down it says through hardened.

Metric linear shafting seems easy to find but imperial in small quantities is more difficult in the UK.

              America has plenty of suppliers.

Received some 3/8" diameter and 1/4" diameter hardened and ground dowel pins plus some small carbide drills and milling cutters at a reasonable price.

I have machined hardened steel with carbide tools before and will probably have to make a jig to machine the cross pin hole that is security for the big end in the crankshaft web.

Marchant Dice list 9.525mm carbon steel rail – priced £1.37 per 100mm in their 'worldofcnc' online shop. Their other types don't seem to be available in 3/8".

Thank you David and have looked it's another useful materials firm to remember for future projects.

Done a test machining on a 3/8" hardened dowel pin and it looks good for the big end with each dowel I can get two big ends from.

Have some 1/4" hardened dowels I'm hoping to use for my gudgeon pins just have to drill an 1/8" hole to lighten it and machine to length.

Have used hardened silver steel for them but think these dowels will be more accurate.

As a self taught ME it's good when the professional engineers point you in useful directions.

                    Full marks to this forum.

Here is a photo of the Ø3/8" ground hardened dowel with the end machined and centre drilled the shiny edge gives an idea of depth of hardness.

These ground hardened dowels depending on diameter can be up to 6inches long they may be of use to model engineers requiring a hard wearing pin for some applications.

Also my Tig welding jig for repair of my steam generator tubing with a test piece in it.
