I had need to cover a ceiling stain and thought easiest would be a coat of oily white gloss it won’t bleed through, then emulsion later.

I had a tin o Dulux Weathershield external 6yr brilliant white gloss. New and unopened but likely bought a few years ago 'cos I don't remember when, why or where.

I opened it up… Burgundy all the way to the bottom..

Better to use one of the stain blockers, even gloss paint will stain through eventually. I have a small spray can and use it occasionally.

'Twas a case of what was on hand – and that my reading reviews on a few varieties of stain blockers had many disappointments. Recommendations? Spraying would be a pain in this case with lost of masking between roof light and wall window

Several years ag I covered a creosote stain with several application of Aluminium metal paint, not the wood primer, still OK. John

White pigment is usually titanium dioxide which is heavy, and so settles out, but if you have stirred it thoroughly right to the bottom my only suggestion is a new fashion trend for burgundy gloss ceilings!

                I'll get me coat!

Zinsser for me but I tend to use "Cover Stain"
