Having built a couple of steam engines, a Stuart no4 and a PM research mill engine which I found most satisfying to build and they both run a treat, I fancy an IC engine. Looking for casting availability I have found a few hit & miss types but I really want a 4 stroke horizontal type of about 1 1/5 inch bore and 2 inch stroke, or so with heavy flywheels to give a nice slow tickover! Anyone point me in the right direction?
You could look at the power unit in the 1-1/2" scale Aveling DX road roller described by ETW in the ME starting January 1938. It is a horizontal water-cooled 4-stroke single approximately 1" bore by 1-1/4" stroke.
Very few of their offerings are on their site, the do put the DX in some of their adverts but just ask them for the catalogue. Which reminds me they do the "the Senior" of Tom Senior fame and if you fancy a challenge then the "Pioneer" with it's Loyal Cycle is a bit different.
I was thinking about the Senior myself but having just won a flame ignition casting set on e-bay last night and put in an order with Graham of Alyn Foundry for a couple of engines will have to put that on hold.
Thanks! The Wyvern and Centaur in particular are the sort of engine I was after. Found some running on YouTube and they can sound great I thought although I haven’t been able to find the bore/stroke of the Centaur? have any of you built one? and is it possible on an ML7 with a milling head attachment?
