          Michael,

Columbia was covered in 16 parts between Oct 78 and Feb 80. As each part would have had several pages, this is obviously a lot of paper.

The issues numbers are from 3594 thru 3626, as usual they were normally every other issue, but sometimes an extra one gap.

          Hope this helps

          Phil

The ever useful index – what would we do without it. Pity you still have to find the issues to read the articles!frown

Hi chaps, went to my local club today and dug out the old copies of ME. Well this was a total waste of time.a introduction to the model type, a bit on the sand boxes and wheels and thats it.not much of a series, just a start an end and not much in the middle.

I need to take the boiler out of the frames for inspection, and was hoping for information on the boiler . Michael

                  Terry,

Columbia boiler; drawings and construction; Model Engineer, 6-19 April 1979, Vol. 145, Number 3606, pages 389-393 inc.

As a thought…. What you are using as search terms as Martin Evans wrote a 'complete' (16 part – I think) construction series for 'Columbia'. Did you try the ME index link that Ady1 gave you above? (on 22/10/2013 at 07:51:58).

                  Regards, etc.,

                  Phil

I think you have been looking in the wrong place. See my post previously. As Weary Phil says, this was a 16-part series. There are 4 pages on the boiler in the issue he mentions.

Hi, I had a look at the back issues, could not see anything in detal re the build, just odd bits on the wheels, sand boxes etc.will take a further look.it maybe that I need to look at building a frame to allow me to turn the loco over to get to the underside.michael

If there's "chunks missing" then it sounds very much like these articles became very much a case of

"it's the same old same old"

So you maybe should be looking for a more complete series article

Don't forget, by the 1960s we built Concorde by hand

If there's anyone old enough, who remembers a "total build" they really should declare it now, while there's still time.

While I may be over 50 now, it's only the net that has made a lot of this possible for me

(and my own insane "let nothing get in the way" attitude)

So if you've got useful knowledge that LINKS apparently poor articles with the accepted level of knowledge back in them days it would be much appreciated by us all.

You must remember guys that everyone back home was doing a minimum of 12 hour days for the war effort until 1945

Then the next generation (my dad) in the 1950s got flung at a massive industrial machine that took every human being it could get it's hands on

Then it got dodgy in the 1960s

Went strangely currency inflationary and oil in the 1970s

and Maggie annihilated it in the 1980s

                              …strange times

                              They will not be repeated

No probs, there might not be a point and I'm getting too old to make an issue out of it

Only someone who knew what I was babbling on about would bother replying

( and more importantly, saw this thread)

It's a mini appeal before we lose their knowledge

Only certain non related articles may have gone in to the level of detail you need because back in "them" days it was taken as basic standard knowledge

Nowadays of course, we know diddly

I've just obtained a complete set of the ME articles on Columbia. There are a lot of pages.

                                  I'm open to offers.

Or "Maisie; A Great Northern 4-4-2." by LBSC 1977.
