My little 1990's Hydrovane 501 compressor has let the "Magic smoke" out of it's run capacitor if anyone has one of these do you know what the value of this capacitor is?

Or better still does anyone have a service manual or handbook for this type of compressor.

        Regards

        Paul

          Have you tried Hydrovane themselves?

Paul sent you the book to your Yahoo account.

Sorry can't help with the capacitor size as mine are 3 phase

Nothing in the handbooks about capacitor size.

Gents thanks very much for the response and a special thanks to John for the book, however as KWIL quite rightly points out it does not mention the motors capacitor sizes just states a part number for the complete motor.

A more detailed read of the motor plate shows it as a "TDA90SZ-H" motor the same plate shows the following "MFD 30/200" this ties in roughly with what you would expect to see as values for run and start capacitors of a 1.1kw motor, so adopting Grahams method went to Brook Crompton's site and whilst I couldnt find the exact model (due to age I guess) i did find a similar motor 1.1kw TDA90SK which uses the same 30/200 uf setup.

Off to rummage through my cap stock for something close.

If I have to buy new I generally get my caps from Cricklewood Electronics the cheapest I have found so far New 30uf Cap.

Here are some pics of the offending cap quite an interesting shape!

                Thanks Again gents

Cheap run capacitors are a false economy. Nothing wrong with getting a bargain price on a good one but the really inexpensive ones are unlikely to be up to running a proper industrial rated single phase motor on compressor duties. They have to work hard for their living and currents are high so efficiency is important to stop it getting hot and there are various other performance parameters involved in selecting the right one. Cheapies tend to be domestic appliance / light duty / limited run time rated so you could well be setting a boy to do a mans work.

Safest to go to compressor specialists with a good knowledge of Hydrovanes to get a fully up to specification capacitor.

Check that the unloading gubbins is working correctly to vent down the air end on stopping so the compressor head runs up to speed off load. Because air delivery is small until the beast is spinning fairly well Hydrovane compressors don't have the massive start-up demand of a piston compressor trying to run up against a full tank without unloading valves. Especially if you are running at modest pressure it may well appear to start up fine despite the unloading device being out of action. In such circumstances the motor will be working very hard to get the last few hundred RPM and may well be technically overloaded. Industrial rated motors can cope with considerable short term (up to minute or so) overloads but the run capacitor really suffers and life severely reduced.
