I am building a 9F in 5" gauge. I want to source 2 "HUCO" Couplings with 5 mm plain bushings to fit each end of the reversing rod. How can I source these couplings? Can anybody help me please?

Try someone like RS as they do quite a few and several of the online bearing and gear suppliers do UJs

Ondrives, Chesterfield, do a wide range of couplings

Anywhere that sells R/C model boat spares should be able to let you have them off the shelf. You can buy single or double jointed couplings plus brass inserts in various threaded or plain sizes. I have some M4 (spoken for!) that could easily be drilled out to 5mm.

              They ain't particularly cheap!

I thought Huco was a brand name rather than a type of coupling.

I've no idea what a reversing rod is but I have a assortment of shaft couplings (not all Huco), what is it you actually need?

In R/C Huco is synonymous with miniature universal joints, I assumed this was what the O/P wants?

Well yes, but reversing rods are not often used in the r/c world. The OP I think wanted something for a steam related.

I am also building a 5" 9F and bought mine from Norman spink now Blackgates took over so they should keep them, the couplings are used on model boat propeller shafts so as said most model shops have them, there not very pretty so I will make my own.

May I suggest you also try BB Engineering Supplies from Dewsbury on 07976 539675 . He usually has a number of different styles of quality UJ available . Think he also has a presence on Ebay and that he will be at Harrogate in May. I have no connection with Company other than as a satisfied customer .

                          Roger,

To help determine what exactly you are seeking:

                          Here is HUCO's 'Coupling Slector'

The Huco couplings are nothing like the real thing I still think you are better making your own proper u joints or ring Mike Hewson he does them for the reverser.

Not looked at the 9f design but assume instead of a traditional long flat reach rod from the reversing quadrant it has a rotating shaft, hence couplings, to a worm drive on the weightshaft.

It does seem a bit odd that someone who is capable of building an entire 9F would want to stick a couple of commercial bright red (all my boat ones seem to be red) plastic dodahs on it. Something must have got lost in translation. Meccano UJs might be a possibility;.

                                Bazyle,

I think what's been 'lost in translation' is the fact that Huco is a manufacturer of [amongst other things] shaft couplings, in a wide range of designs.

Specifying a 'HUCO Coupling' without identifying which one, is as meaningless as saying "secure with Loctite" … and the fact that tatty red plastic universal joints are generically referred to as 'HUCO type" must be frustrating to say the least. [albeit very convenient for the purveyors of tat]

The Huco couplings I have encountered are usually to take care of minor shaft misalignment and are backlash free for the drive to encoders or synchros.
