I have ordered the Eccentric Diamond Tool Holder. It comes with a single ¼ inch square HSS tool of M42 grade, 8% cobalt HSS and I am looking for additional supplies. It is supposedly easily available… but clearly I am rather simple as I cannot find a UK supplier.
I am hoping that some of you can point me in the direction of a UK mail order supplier of suitable HSS tool steel blanks?
As I have written in another topic you cannot be sure what you are buying these days. I bought some 10% cobalt HSS from J&L thinking I was buying a brand that proudly boasts that their products are U.S. made, only to find “China” written on the stuff. J&L do list Eclipse brand HSS, which again should be UK made, but who knows these days.
1/4″ HSS should still be available from any proper engineering supply house, in a variety of grades.
If you go to any auto jumble and rummage around used machinery stands, you should be able to fine lots of short lengths, which is all you need for a Tangential holder, for pennies..
When you get your holder do write again and tell us what you think of it.

PS the GLR price seems too good to be a non China product, and such things do not always attract favourable comments. A 4″ length of Eclipse of 5%Cobalt is over £12.
Have a look on Ebay. I bought 2 boxes each having 12 at 1/4″ square & 12 at 3/8″ square . Each box was marked Eclipse, very grubby (old) contents still wrapped in oiled paper & in perfect condition. They were advertised as “Bits as new old stock” Total cost including post was £5.75. No one put in a bid. Couldn`t believe my luck.
There is a marked difference in M42 and the chinese tool steel, I have had a Diamond toolholder for around 18 months now and the M42 tool steel it came with goes around twice as long before re-sharpening and is more resistant to the odd mishap.
I found this M42 seems a bit expensive in comparison to the Chinese stuff.
I have found a UK supplier of genuine European produced M42 – West Yorkshire Steel – and they do a great range (see http://www.westyorkssteel.com/tool_bits.html) but supply business and industry. However they are prepared to supply in minimum quantities of 20 – or even 10 and I am getting a price from them, it will be interesting to see how their prices campare to the Knighton ones posted above.
I find 4in bits a bit of a nuisance – too long in holders- and I prefer the 2 1/2 in. length. If you are exclusively using an Eccentric holder then resharpening is so easy that doing it a bit more frequently is not a problem.
I called her on Tuesday, paid by PayPal (but direct bank transfer is also quick) and the tool kit arrived yesterday (Wedneday). Better service than that is not possible. Also if you order direct from Aus or USA it will cost you more – unusual in ROB.

Hello,
Can you help, I am from the UK and have one of your excellent Diamond Toolholders. The original piece of tool steel supplied with it is almost at an end, do you have a recommended supplier of suitable M42 1/4″ tool steel in the UK.
Regards
Paul
