HSS Inserts

Has anyone tried HSS inserts such as these? **LINK**

I much prefer HSS over carbide for a satisfactory finish. Thought I would poll the members before I give these a try.

Yep, I've used them for a fair while, probably 9 or 10 years. I also use carbide for roughing and hard steels. The HSS tips from A R Warner are excellent, they are very easy to sharpen using a flat diamond thingy, take the tip out of the holder first though.

They are certainly not particularly cheap, but they seem to last forever, take only 1 or 2 minutes to give a "lick" on the diamond doofa. In my opinion they are better than pratting around with lumps of HSS and an off hand grinder, which I still have to do with some lesser used tools….

Give them a go!!

Yes. I bought ten CCMW 2-1.5-.5 T15 HSS direct from Warner's some years ago & find them very good as Bill above says. The only down side is paying the import tax & Royal Mail a fee ( £8 I think) to process the tax. Ideally it would better to buy from the UK or get a friend in the US to send them as a gift.

I would be interested to hear if you find somewhere out of the US to purchase them from.

I intend to give them a go. I may wait for a month or so to see if the Cdn dollar improves against the US dollar.

The US border is about one and a quarter hours away from my house. There is a shop on the US side located only 300 M from the border. They are on my list of PayPal shipping addresses. They charge $3 US to receive UPS packages on behalf of anyone. I pick it up and bring it back through customs. No duty on imported US goods, just the tax to pay. Saves me those murderous brokerage fees. I usually wait until I have enough on order to save on the fuel expense.

I'm in the position where a family member can obtain these for me and bring them back within his personal allowance, but I'm struggling with suitable holders.

It seems that their kits seem to use CCMW 2-1.5-1 tips and whilst I could buy from Warner, I'm wondering if there is an equivalent suitable holder available within the UK as this would reduce the drag on the family member's personal allowance. So what do other users use?

Looks to me as if these are simply imperial dimensions for what the rest of the world would know as CCXX060204 ie IC=6.35 (1/4" ); t=2.38 (0.093" ) and r=0.4mm (0.015" ), hole dia 2.8mm (0.11" ). Mercans!

In which case you should be able to use almost any std toolholder. I've got loads of CCXX060204 inserts and the toolholders are widely available in a range of qualities and prices

I bought ten CCMW 2-1.5-.5 T15 HSS direct from Warner's some years ago which fit in the several SCLC(R & L) lathe tool & boring bar holders which use the CCMT 060202 carbide inserts.

I know what you mean. Before I retired I did consider the cost of inserts and decided to give a Tangential tool holder a try as a more cost effective option. Cost in easily resharpened HSS is pennies a year for me. I've recently bought some M42 HSS bits for a couple of pounds each from Cromwells. I still use insert tooling in both the Lathe when I need to and the mill but I actually prefer the Tang tool for turning.
