        Hi All,

I am now the proud owner of a lovely 3" scale Burrell traction engine, and just about ready to give her a run, but can someone suggest whats the best way to initially fill the boiler, there is a blow down, awkward to get to,but thats just a brass bolt with no tube of sorts to attach a pipe, so any ideas? Only other place i can see is boiler site glass, but that seems abit risky, so any suggestions from Burrell owners, and alike! Would be very grateful for your thoughts on this.

        regards

        Mark

I think the blowdown is the way a lot of people do it, make a hose adaptor to screw in and either a length of hose & funnel or a small 12v pump which can be run off the same battery a sthe electric blower. Open the top water gauge fitting to allow the air to vent. Another option is to take the whistle out and use that hole and a funnel.

The subject came up recently on Traction Talk Forum which is would be well worth you joining. Then you can read the whole thread about filling

            Thanks J

Yea whistle will do for the time being, and at a later stage i shall make or find adaptor for drain, thanks again

I take out the plug from the top of the clack valve and screw in a hose with an adapter on one end and a funnel on the other. This means that the water I put in goes directly into the boiler.

I'm not so keen on filling the boiler or hydraulic testing through ports in the cylinder block because when I come to steam the engine next, I often the cylinder is primed with water and has a very wet start.

              Dan.
