A few observations/comments from here.
I don’t possess any carbide ‘thread-form’ cutters/inserts so I carry out my (limited) thread cutting with HSS.
I turn the top slide to the appropriate angle – both less load than diving straight in and the increase in the cut is actually less than the top slide change.
Never use a steel hammer unless you don’t mind risking brinelling your bearings.
Never dismount the part from the chuck, for checking. Remove the chuck, instead. Even cutting a dummy thread as a test piece is better than removal of the part from the chuck.
Threading outwards (as per Hopper) obviates the risk of a crash, particularly if the thread is a blind one.
