Likely no need for a more expensive (at the time) 4 jaw chuck, as most ‘offset’ work could be accomplished with use of a face plate.
Back in the day the basic equipment sold with the lathe was a hard and soft centre, catch plate and a faceplate, chucks were expensive luxuries.
