I tried once to subscribe to the Digital editions of MEW, and thought I was successful. I got a confirmation page displayed, and printed it out. I have it here on the desk in front of me as I type.

However, I have received nothing that tells me how to access my digital subscription. Am I to expect receipt of a subscriber number, a password, or other means of accessing my digital subscription?

Do I need to contact the N.A. distributor somehow to get my digital subscription activated? Is the link on this very webpage in the right-hand column the proper method to subscribing? If I attempt a second subscription, will I get charged twice?

I got confirmation email. I guess the system updates(links) your
subscriber number with this new service, so you only have to paste your
subscriber number in the Model Engineers’ Workshop (Digital) field which
is in My Account/My Details section of web site.

            Hi There
Normally you get an email telling you how to access it.
Email me direct and we will try to sort it out.

I am supplying the office with the first 20 copies of MEW to Rescan.
I would scan them myself but unfortunatly don’t have the time.

I might try the first one and see how I get on. They reckon 45mins per magazine but I think this is too optimistic.
I might be able to do one a day though.

It will take some time to send magazines to the office because of the weather.
            regards David

              Hi
I’ve been buying the magazine for several years, here in Sweden. I’m reluctant to take a subscription because of your slightly ancient system of requiering my card number plus three digit control number. If I gave it to you like that my bank would freak out, recall my card and not pay you. I would rather just stuff the money in an envelope and send you since that would be less risky. Why, oh why don’t you have PayPal?
The digital subscribtion, what format do I get the magazine in? I can’t find that information anywhere.
              Regards
              Christer Bau

This has happened to me and I was sent an email confirming my subscription. The email stated that my subscription number would be advised by post!!!! Get real, I’m in Australia and in the 21st century which may not have reached the Royal Mail yet.

An email was sent to ask for it but was bounced back.

I do hope that my subscription will be started from when I do actually get access other wise I’ll be more than slightly annoyed.

I have the same problem, trying to make them at Hobbystore understand, that we european customers might have a suscription with our supplier, but not with Hobbystore. So our subscription number is not registered with Hobbystore, and we therefore need a special solution to this problem.

The digital archive is free to all subscribers, at least that is what the information in the magazine says, and that is exactly what the editor wrote in his column too.

Three emails to Hobbystore and no positive reply yet, my last mail I sent a week ago.
                  only slightly annoyed?

Have you sent a email to David Clark (Editor and Moderator)?

Although it may not be his job, he will sort it out for you.

And he does answer his emails.

Every visa site I’ve ever used on the web asks for those. The point of the three digits is tehy are the one buit of information not on the card electronically.

If you think about it, it’s implicit that every time you make a purchase the person you give the data gets all the information they need to make a purchase in your name… other than verified by Visa where you give a password too a third party who confirms your identity the only way to do this would be to have some form of private key encryption, which I reckon will come.

Absolutely. Anyone you give the card to has access to all the information on the card. If you use it in some places (Restaurants, We-Serve gas stations) they even take the card out of your sight for a while (although that’s changing with wi-fi card readers). Credit-card information isn’t and never was secure; online is no worse than offline.

Some jurisdictions have moved to improve verification. In the US for instance, many gas stations require the user to input his zip code when using a card which is then verified against the computer records. Major PITA if you’re not from the US (and don’t have a zip code) because you can’t use a credit card at the pump. (Moreover, it’s not as secure as they suggest since anyone who’s lost his card or had it stolen has likely lost his wallet along with it, which almost certainly contains his zip code).

The current trend towards cards with embedded chips used with a user-input PIN might help ….. but not online.

                            Sleazy ,
Are you sure your details were correct when you filled out the subscription form ?
Only takes a typo to stuff up on your E-mail adress.

Peter , i’m also in Australia but had no problem with the Digital subscription but couldn’t get past the last page for the hardcopy version .
It just simply refused to let me subscribe saying something about delivery not available to this area so i went Digital and never looked back !

Christer , I puchase a lot of stuff over the internet using my mastercard and usually from the U.S.A.
Most of these websites ask for the three digit code , my name , address and of course card number and expiry date and the MEW site is no different .
They typically use a secure server for this and i have had no issues thus far but two rules i have with credit cards are :

                            (1) never ever let anyone take your card out of your hand unless you have a 100% view of what they are doing and even then i still insist on swiping the card myself even if i have to argue the point as it takes less than 2 seconds for them to run it through a card reader hidden under the counter run it through the eftpos machine and then watch you punch in your pin .
This is getting worse here in Australia by the day !
They then have everything to rob your account !
This happened to my friends next door neighbour at a fuel station nths ago, shame the fool that double swiped her hard did not realize she is a Detective !
                            OUCH !

                            (2) Get a visa debit card and only transfer to it what you need to make a purchase over the internet – hard for the thieves to buy stuff if it is an empty account !

                            IAN

Surely that’s a debit-card system your referring to there? And I would wholeheartedly agree in that case. I never let that out of sight.

With credit cards though, there is nothing on the magnetic stripe that isn’t in human readable form on the card itself (plus the odd checksum to confirm the data quality). So anyone who receives your card has all the info contained on it anyway. There’s nothing secure in that sense.

For online purchases, you need to give address information and telephone number which are verified when the transaction is approved. Most CC companies require that sellers ship only to the address registered on the card for obvious reasons (if they don’t – and there are some – it’s at their own risk).
