Not seen anything like this before. Anyone used one?

One clue about its use is in the Link – Woodworking. But that does not stop it being useful for other stuff, too – have a good look at it and if, for you, it will work better than what you've got already, leave a note for Santa and cross your fingers.

          Regards, Tim

Abom79 uses a 6" Starrett hook rule all the time when he's turning (ok maybe not all the time, but often). Of course, his are imperial. Metric 150 mm ones seem to be non-existent over here, so this one almost fits the bill – thanks for the link, I think I'll get one of those as a Christmas present for my other half – it's the thought that counts, and my thought is that she won't know what to do with it and will give it to me.

I have made something very similar. Yesterday I submitted a short article to Neil to consider for his short article edition.

Axminster do one called "Axminster Layout Square". Currently £14.95.

Harold Hall mentioned this tool in one of his articles a few years ago.

I've bought one, but to be honest, I haven't used it that much having forgotten about it.

Just had a look at that site – and read the bit which says "Depending on your design, the engraving position will have a tolerance of +- 3mm." So probably not much use them making hook rules then.

Both the Kinex and the Axminster rules are quite different to the Starrett version, probably because they are aimed at cabinet making rather than metal machining.

this 3m was explained in the forum – see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10690834 apparently the 3mm is from edge of the material being used – all internal measurement + cutting claim to be to 0.01mm but I’ve no personal knowledge tho does look cheap for some fancy 1 off control panels

I have an Axminster one I bought after Harold mentioned it. It's very nicely made and gets some use. I often think it would be more useful with a vernier scale and have wondered idly about engraving one on the sliding piece.

got one. Quite handy for speedy edge layout on wood and metal

                              Unless I miss the purpose.

To do this I use the step “function” on my calliper.( digital).
Look on the back of the scale..you will see the moving jaw is stepped from the slide..
