Hobson H7 Information please

Hello everyone, I have recently aquired a Hobson H7 lathe as an upgrade to my much loved Myford ML4. The new beast has more handles than the simple ML4 and although I will need to thoroughly clean and lubricate it I would be most grateful for any information that any owner might have. I have read Tony's lathe pages on the Hobson and mine seems to have been fitted with an ML7 tailstock, the two levers that are on the head stock gearbox casting are a mystery, although I assume they are speed change levers, but in what combination? If anyone can assist me in finding a user manual, or who is familiar with this lathe and would be prepered to answer my questions, I would be most grateful.

The text on Lathes site says it has 6 gears from the gearbox and the picture of the headstock without cover shows that the rear shaft gives 3 postions (left lever) and the front 2 posttions (excluding neutrals). You could work out the positions for the speeds from the pictures if you don't want to go out to the shed to experiment.

Thank you Kwil and Bazyle for taking the trouble to assist me, I have started to look properly inside this beast and the gear positions are clear as you point out, I hoped to find answers to the following: Headstock Lubricant. type and quantity, preload for spindle bearings, size of spindle bearings( I do not want to remove and possibly damage further a bearing that cannot easily be sourced) I understand that many questions could be answered by measurement, thread sizes, but I wanted to know what they should be before 60 plus years of use and abuse! one T slot has been broken by using filed down hex head bolts to locate the compound and she has a weird tailstock. I hope my input will be positive and give many more years of service, but I need the help of more knowledgeable and experienced mentors.Thanks again both of you.

Hi Paul,

I was wondering if you got any further with your restoration and info on the H7 ?…..I have recently purchased the Hobson 5.75 and modified with a new 3ph motor on an inverter and a lazer tacho to show exact speed of chuck.

I've changed the oil to what was recommended but the lathe as standard only goes up to around 950 rpm….would love to know if you have managed anything faster with no bearings issues ?

Hi all,

Just joined the group as I'm also a proud owner of the Hobson H7.

I did a speed test using a cheap £10 lazer rpm meter. Not sure how accurate these are? Results as follows.
