Can anyone tell me where a could get a replacement motor for my hobbymatt or does anyone know if I could get it repaired.

When I turn it on the switch clicks and I have tested the wiring with a volt stick and there appears to be voltage going to the motor.

I have stripped the motor out of the mill ad I cannot rotate the motor by hand. Does anyone have any idea’s what the problem is and how it could be fixed

          Hi Mike,
I think you will have to dismantle the motor to find out why it has sized up. If the motor has got very hot at some time the insulating varnish may have melted. It could be the bearings but it is unusual for them to be totally sized. It could also be some foreign object has found its way into the motor.

            Hi Mike,

If its overheated the armature may have melted partly and seized in the casing which probably means its U/S.

If you are lucky it’s a bearing that’s collapsed seizing solid or causing the now mis-aligned armature to catch. That might be repairable.

Thanks for your replies. I am going to strip the motor down tomorrow but if it is U/S does anyone know where I might get a replacement motor. It would be a shame to scrap the whole thing as I have all the attachments to go with the mill / drilling head.

Essel Engineering supply spares for Hobbymat machines, that just may include the motors. Otherwise, they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thank you all for your help. I have connected essel and I am going to strip the motor down this afternoon.

Let’s hope i can fix it or stating work on the Simplex will be delayed again while I find another drilling / milling machine.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to repair your existing motor. However, if it’s beyond repair, there’s a point you need to be aware of.

According to the motor plate on my BFE65 (geared-head, MT1 spindle, c.1990 vintage), the motor has an IEC 63 frame which would normally correspond to a shaft diameter of 11mm. However, this motor actually has a shaft diameter of 14mm which corresponds to an IEC 71 frame. So, if it comes to replacement I suggest you:

                    1. Measure the diameter of your motor spindle,
                    2. Pay close attention to the specs of any new IEC 63 motor you select to ensure the spindle diameter matches your existing motor.
                    Joe

Stripped the motor down and found that the motor would rotate once it was disassembled. I have cleaned the parts and now have a working motor.

Thanks for all your help and advice. This has saved me £78 that I was going to spend on a new motor.

If anyone ever needs a motor for this milling head they are available on ebay from the electric motor man

                      Motor cost £56 + flange mount £10 + delivery £12

                        Result!
Was it just crud in the bearings or bits jamming the aramture?

I think it was just muck and the brake was sticking
