I live about 20 miles from the Hinckley C nuclear power station being constructed.

Can see Big Carl (a crane) from our house.

Went into Bridgwater last week, first time in over a year and was amazed at the development going on there.

Moral of the story for old struggling industrial towns, build a nuclear power station.!!!

So far behind schedule I hear they are employing 1700 'extra' people to speed things up.

          1700 x £50,000 = £85,000,000/p.a.

And we need at least another six like this to replace those to be taken out of service soon.

Then you should be aware that it's HINKLEY C.

              Still cleaning up Windscale atm

Has cost well over 100 billion bananas so far lol, we could have put wind power round the entire country for the cost of a single site cleanup

and 1950s nucular was going to be so cheap we could get all our electricity for free…. said the experts

Quite right John, Hinkley. Slip of the finger, my excuse is that I'm a Brummie so more familiar with the Hinckley of Leicestershire fame.

Yes did learn early on in my Somerset sojourn that Bridgwater does not have an 'e' after the 'g'.

(A sojourn that has lasted 26 years so far!)

Ah, long gone happy days , all the sons learned to swim at Street and I learned how to eat meatless streaky bacon and tinned tomatoes every morning in a TNPG Nissen hut.

I am very grateful to BCL (British Cellophane Ltd) or smellyphane which used to be part of Courtaulds – they had a brilliant personnel development programme and paid me to go to university. Miss the old place.

I note that Port Talbot still smells sulphurous, but not as bad as it used to be.

There are now living trees on the hills north of the motorway, when I was a boy they were covered in dead trees.

Bill, I worked in R&D (later to become Development and Technical) from 76 through to 86 with a sojourn to Southampton Uni from 79-82. I have very fond memories of working there. Yes, I remember the railway line which I think brought in caustic and acid for the cellophane process although I think the oil for the power station came in by pipeline from Dunball??

I transferred my pension when I moved on to Grand Metropolitan in 1986 but am now getting the benefit since reaching 65 in Jan.

Time to buy a portable generator ?

News today EDF closing Dungeness B , now, seven years before planned.

But, Hinkley C will be up and running in 2026 .

                                          Bets anyone ?

Just a little background, as I remember ,when they came to fit the boilers into Dungeness B they were too big !

A slight embarrassment , final costs were about £110m ,as against £70m estimate.

A similar size today , Hinkley C is £23 billion ( a pig has flown by my window ).

We have just lost 1GW of reliable 'green' energy from the Grid, an awful lot of wind turbines.

Actually 13 years after its initial design life, so not too bad really. Started generating in 1983. Why don't we just build some more AGRs, we know they work, we have built 7 of them, there is a current safety case, need I go on? Put them next to the existing ones and re-use the turbines, condensers, cooling towers etc, and keep the experienced workforce in a job.

As chaps on here are mentioning industrial whiffs I am reminded of when I did my stint at the engineering apprentice training school at Port Sunlight. The 24/7 rancid pong from the soap factory was enough to put me of my landladies’ egg and chips.

Years later, we lived downwind from Stewartby and the sulphurous emissions from the brick yard chimneys were ‘orrid.

I watched the documentary on Hinkley Point in the last couple of weeks. I never realised how vast it is going to be.
