Greetings to all from Perth Western Australia. My name is Pete and I work as an IT Tech.

About four years ago I tried to build a CNC machine from timber and bits and pieces. It was a flimsy affair but served to stimulate my interest in the field. Fortunately, through the CNC machine, I met a couple very experienced fellows who have been tremendously generous with their time and have helped me advance a long way from where I began. With their help I have since build a much more robust and serious CNC machine based on the chassis of a Taylor Hobson pantograph (1953).

More recently I got a Drummond Type B lathe (1919) from my father who had bought it for a few dollars 45 years ago and then "stored" it in his garage – along with a lot of other stuff of varying utility. I now have that working and to my amazement was able to make one of the knurled fasteners that holds the changegears in place. My goal is to restore this lathe and use it to learn lathe work.

I also have a Creality CR-10 3D printer which might find itself printing changegears in nylon as soon as I get around to building a drying cabinet for the nylon filament.

My primary reason for joining this forum is to learn and perhaps later, to contribute a little as I gain experience.

      Regards, Pete

Welcome aboard Pete–it sounds like you have made many steps already on what is an absorbing and rewarding interest.

Do write up your work, material of that kind is always interesting. In the meantime, enjoy learning as you go along

          Regards

Brian from a rather stormy looking day in North Yorkshire

Hello Pete and welcome. As (the other) Brian says, please keep us up to date with progress.

I'm an old fashioned type of engineer but am looking at cnc machines as I think that this is the future. All I need is a Lottery win!!

We all have our own hobby horses that we like to ride, so there will be conflicting pieces given. That is where you either have to count the votes, or make up your own mind.

But that is all pert of the fun of participating. there is always something to learn.

Welcome Peter, which model was your Taylor Hobson ? I used to own a model K which was I believe a pretty late model.

Have you joined the groups.io forum for Drummonds? Loads of info in their files. You can probably print gears in PLA and there are files on Thingi for them, but material intensive I believe as they are 100% fill.
