Well, I have just had a Myford ML7 land in my lap courtesy of an old friends son, it seem to be in pretty good nick and dates from 1956. It sits on a sheet steel cabinet that looks to be home made,but its a bit flimsy and the lathe isn't bolted down.I have been thinking about how I'm going to set up the area in my garage so its on a rigid surface and level.

I'm looking forward to many hours of fun and learning,I think this forum is going to be very useful !

Hi Jack welcome to the forum. I had a cabinet for my lathe which wasn't strong enough and I made a tray for the top from 3mm plate with a turned up edge to retain swarf and coolant and bolted a wooden shelf system which also stores material stock etc. The difference was amazing and sturdy. What are you interested in making models, bikes, and where in NZ are you there are a few members there who may help.

Well, many thanks for the welcome, I’m in Taupo, at the moment I’m just getting the electrics safe, they have been checked over by a friendly industrial electrician I work with and apart from a new plug and the recommendation of a RCD device, all is looking ok.
Im not sure what will be the 1st project for the lathe, probably a canon or something,then maybe a stationary steam engine, maybe a Stirling engine down the track a bit.

Hello Jack and welcome. A cannon was my first turning project. The one that I did was shown as a drawing in a book "The Anatomy of Nelsons Ships" by C.Nepean Longridge and is one from HMS Victory but I'm sure that other drawings will be available.

All the best with it and please let us know how you are getting on with whatever you decide to do.

Was that the long 12pdr Brian ? If so I was about 3/4 way to completing, taken from the same book, before I went off adventuring to foreign parts.

Wonderful new worlds are about to open up to you. All sorts of jobs that used to be impossible will now be run of the mill.

Do make sure that the cabinet is sturdy, does not rock,and, finally that the bed is free from twist (A hobby horse of mine )

When your friends and neighbours find out, you may become the local "Mr Fixit". Bur beware of the bod who says "Can you just? Shouldn't be a long job" Nevertheless, avast amount of satisfaction from all the jobs that you will do

LOTS of good advice on here, if you ever need it. And a lot of interesting stuff to read, enlarging our knowledge.
