Hi, I'm the lucky owner of an M type which I'm learning to tidy and use, having had a break from lathes since my apprenticeship (don't ask how long). I've read useful posts here for half a year – thanks.

Hello Howard and welcome to the forum. I think that lathe use is akin to bike riding, you never forget how to do it but the technology has moved on since learning.

The 'M' type is an excellent lathe for learning on; what plans do you have for making items with it?

            Welcome from another Howard!

Lathes UK website has a lot of info on the Myford M type. It was invaluable when I helped a chap recommission his ML4. he had a complete set of Changewheels, but no studs, among other problems.

Changewheels from 7 Series machines will fit, being the same DP and Pressure Angle, but need to have a 3/32 hole drilled halfway through to take the Driving Pin.

If you can get / make a couple of extra 20T and a extra 60T, you can set up a train to give a fine power feed of 0.0043"/rev.

You will find that the Centre Height changed between the ML1, the ML2 and the later ML3 and ML4., also the thread on the Mandrel changed from 7/8 x 9 (7/8 BSW) through 7/8 x 12 tpi to, eventiually, 1 1/8 x 12 tpi, the same as the 7 Series..

Threads, of course will be BSW or BSF..

The dial graduations are not plain thous, because of the 12 tpi leadscrews. At least the main Leadscrew is 8 tpi!

Ensure that the 1/4 BSW Tailstock adjuster is securely locked, so that you maintain the alignment.

            Good luck!.

              HI Brian

I will eventually get to modelling, mostly for the challenge, and hence here. In the meantime I've been happy to be able to make random parts for my old boat – bushings for a towed generator, a nice low-profile brass catch and a repair skin fitting and retaining cap for a log (speedo impellor). I expected to need to do more work on the lathe but it was in better condition than I expected (ebay purchase) so I have been able to use it without too much work. I have made a backplate to give me use of a 4 jaw chuck, next project is to make a 1MT 16mm milling mandrel.

I'm in York. Mostly I've been buying online, so if you do know of anything local that would be interesting, I seem to pay more on postage than on materials,

Try M machine metal suppliers. They have a downloadable catalogue and supply tube, cast iron, and bronze and much more. http://www.m-machine-metals.co.uk/metals_menu.html

If you can't find what you want call them they are helpfully and prompt in posting.

If you are in York, there should be some metal suppliers not too far away. The downside may be that they only supply in 3 metre lengths, but most will cut once or twice for free

The thought of a ML1 with a metre of steel through the mandrel to part off is a bit mind boggling, but anything that goes through a 1 MT should be easy meat for a hacksaw. Not so funny if if its two inch bar, though! (A lifetime supply? )

(Wish I could find who installed autospell/correct on here! He does NOT know better than me, meter indeed )

You have to enable the forum spellcheck every time you use it. If you're spellcheck is always in it's the spellchecker in your browser so it's your own fault
