Hi Sandra, welcome, It's nice to get some young blood on the forum. In a few years time you will be giving us advice on how to do things, don't make it too technical.laugh

Welcome Sandra. Are you making anything in Grandad's workshop? You will probably need some basic tools in your apprenticeship. Some centre punches, cold chisels, screwdriver etc might be a good place to start (if you haven't already made some bits). Good luck! Any questions just ask, there is a lot of wide range experience in the ME forum.

Thank you Jeff I have some basic tools but hoping to add to what I've got this Christmas. Can I add people as friends on here?

Hi Sandra welcome to the forum. Glad to see you have an interest in engineering. My wife is an engineer of 40 years experience. When she did her degree she was one woman amongst a class of 42 men. She got stuck in and showed she was just as good if not better than some as she finished with top honours. Stick to it and I hope you end up with a very worthwhile career.

Yes you can add a friends request on the right of the page by clicking the person icon under "my friends"  Good luck and enjoy the forum and your career.

                  regards

Hi Sandra, welcome, nice to have young blood on here smiley, you're not far from me as I live in Ross-on-Wye and am a member of Hereford Society of Model Engineers. If you could get to Hereford on Saturdays they run a young engineers course which might be of help to you in the future.

Welcome to the forum Sandra. What sort of apprenticeship are you thinking of doing? Way back in the 1970s I looked at doing an apprenticeship with W H Allens in Bedford. That would have been heavy engineering, as they made steam turbines, diesel engines and large pumps.

Thank you Andrew. It's harder nowadays as the uk is all about IT but we need to keep engineering going. Anyone up for a chat please feel free to say hi x

                                  Another welcome here.

I’m not a machinist – more Physics and Chemistry with a bit of maths thrown in – but have had a varied working life.

DBS is still current but I’m not sure if I will use it much now. Grandson, who is now 9, is looking like a promising apprentice for my workshop in the near future.

The country most certainly needs manufacturing industry not just service industries, so go for it. Just remember that engineering has a whole load of prefixes – not just ‘mechanical’.

We've noticed some anomalies on an account – not least, it uses a US-based email provider. I've also had reports that it is approaching forum members to carry on conversations on the largely North-America based messaging platform KIK.

KIK is known as one of the most anoymous of popular messaging platforms, so we are concerned that this may be an another attempt to scam forum members.
