I am assembling a Mamod loco following words and music by Ian Jowett and others and he mentions smearing non moving parts with Green Hermatite. Not struck the word before and assume it is a form of gasket goo. Hope somebody can confirm or stop me before I wreck the wee loco

Green and golden? I thought they were red and blue or am I a few decades behind the marketing?

As said green is a thick(ish) varnish like sealer, intended for joints that will not be dismantled. Have not seen it for years An oil based varnish or paint can be used instead ,not modern acrylic or cellulose. I liked the old green stuff.

                I don't remember Hermetite doing a'Blue', I think that was Hylomar SQ32.

Available to us in medium and light versions, was far less messy than hemetite products and used intensively on aircraft components.

I have not seen Green Hermatite for at least 35 years. The only thing it was any good at was gluing handle bar rubbers onto motorbike handle bars.

                    Ah those were the days!

Laboriously making gaskets out of brown paper, then using lashings of gasket goo.

Must not forget the red or green fingerprints left on various parts.

                      .

Red and Green were the originals … Golden is relatively new.

I favour WELLSEAL as it sticks like the proverbial to a blanket and seal very well when used with gaskets. It doesn't completely set so be ware.

Just a couple of quick ones :- Handlebar grips just need a slosh of petrol and then a quick push on. Using cement is a waste of good money. they are still made out of rubber aren't they? Good gaskets don't need gasket goo. To much sealer is worse than to little. OK 3 quick ones.

And if you do use gasket sealer, the spray can Hylomar applied thinly and allowed to dry before assembly works a treat on most applications other than head gaskets on IC engines.

Reading the first post again, I'm all for a wetahered look, but wouldn't green paint look better?
