Hi All, I am at present advertising in the wanted classified ads to try and get one of these kits to build for my Myford lathe. I would be interested to know if any members had made one and if they were pleased with the end result.

        Thans Mike

            Hi,

I made one of these and have used it very successfully lots of times. The kit was excellent and it was easy to make – one of the first things I made.

I hope nobody minds me hijacking this thread. I, too, bought the Hemingway Taper Turning Attachment. However, the instructions give little advice on how to put the ‘coarse’ graduations on the end of the guide bar. These graduations have to be made at a 45deg angle on the end of a bar around 11.5” long at a radius of 5.75”. I’d be really interested to know whether this can be achieved with a small milling machine (Sieg SX3) and rotary table (I don’t yet have one, but intend to purchase a 6&rdquo.

              Any advice gratefully received.
              Many thanks,

              Mike

No, it’s not the tailstock one but the link in the second post (Neil’s)

I notice that Hemingway's version is based upon Ali castings. Seems a better proposition than the OEMs cast iron version. It's one hell of a colossal weight! I purchased one second hand in apparently little used and good condition, many years ago when I possessed something called strength! Even then, I couldn't hold it in position long enough and in alignment to screw it to the rear of the Myford. Lathe against wall and immovable, so attachment not used but also not had need to so far.

Take the above as a warning to give serious consideration to Hemingway's lighter version, rather than the original Myford one.

GHT left his Myford TTA permanently in place with a fabricated cover to keep out the chips.

I wonder if it would help in mounting it to use studs rather than screws to attach to the back of the bed.

My S7 came with the Myford TTA already fitted & I have not felt the need to remove it, so weight of the base unit has not been an issue for me – not got around to making a cover for it though.

As removing it would doubtless affect the setting, and as it took quite a while to get it adjusted to turn accurate 2MT tapers, removing it would not seem to be a good idea anyway.

I made the original version 30 years ago, shortly after I acquired a used S7. The main unit has been removed once from the bed during that period, to get the bed reground. The arm is left permanently attached to the cross slide. I leave the guide off the TTA.
