Going back to the cleanness of the graduations, Ian Bradley (one half [?] of Duplex) suggested using a brass bar held against the revolving steel dial to remove the small raised swarf left by the tool.
I’ve never tried it – I only used Wet & Dry wrapped round a flat stick (never Emery) to even up things afterwards. The new cross slide, topslide and leadscrew dials fitted on the lathe in the photo above (fitted long after it was taken) were done using setups for 100 and 125 on the spindle. I didn’t really cut quite deep enough on the leadscrew dial, so it’s a bit feint.
Oddly, the original cross slide dial was very hard to see, and unusually worn. There was no topslide dial, as you see in the photo, but there now is a square ‘lattice’ design dial.
Leadscrew dial to be re-done at a later date.
