      Hi

I have just had a disaster with my Simplex wheels, after hours of machining and producing a supurb set of wheels i pressed the trailing crankpins into the wheel. I now have a hairline crack across the boss to the crankpin hole, i can only assume that i have made the crankpins over size. Is the wheel scrap or can i just ignore the crack as the main wheel casting is still ok.

      Thanks Ian

Hello Ian – you will probably get a lot of conflicting advice over your problem. It might all come down to what is acceptable to yourself. Yes, you may well have made the pins oversize which has caused the cracks but if you can live with "faulty" wheels then that should be OK.

I am definitely not a perfectionist but I would have to bung the lot in the bin, get new castings (maybe from a different supplier) and start again. Its painfull, expensive but you'll sleep sounder.

Hi Ian have you got silvering or braising facilitites if so braise the cracks they canbe turned sgain and after painting will not be noticed.

Next ream out your holes for your crankpins
            Push push them in
Then get a very small drill ensuring you have the correct wire available apart from loctite or similal will give a very solid fixing. do them in the rear and thry will not be spotted by tne rivet counters.

No worries. I've heard that rivet counters shrivel up and blow away on the wind, like a vampire in sunlight, when exposed to a Simplex.

If they are dry clean cast iron then superglue will soak in and give a very capable joint on a not critical part

I even fixed a broken lathe fixed steady this way, just to see how it went.

Has been fine so far, but I only ever use it on <80rpm speeds
