      Hi everyone,

Is anyone able to help identify these two model engines made by Whitney of London.

I assume they are gas / steam powered ?

      Many thanks.

One on the left is a twin not unlike the D10 of Stuarts the other looks like a feed water pump, a variation on the weir type, an interesting arrangement with an accumulator to take out pulsations. Noel.

          Hi Noel,

Many thanks for the very useful info. I’m looking to sell the feed water pump, would you know where I could advertise it and also a rough value ? Thanks, Ian

I’d go for Ebay, esp. now with no sellers’ fees, as giving the widest coverage for a “market value”. A reasonably good Stuart equivalent goes perhaps for £250 – £300 from memory. Can you confirm that yours is a runner? That and its unusual make might help the value. Give as much detail as possible.

Thanks Clive, the one on the right (the feed water pump) is a Stuart equivalent ? If so, what does that mean exactly ?

PS: I’m going to test it to see if it operates correctly before advertising.

I’m surprised Michael hasn’t exercised his Google-fu but here’s what it has to say about Whitney. Lots of images of other Whitney engines on Google as well. Rarity might make it worth more than a Stuart Turner

Hi Sid, Look up Stuart Models, Steam Water Feed Pump, you will see a similarity, though the whitney version is more compact. Steam powered, it has no crank, the steam piston acting on the water pump piston. This model has a damping chamber as mentioned before. Clive is right about value, and you may be surprised if the right person sees it. This type of model is often not easy to get running due to needing the valve gear set properly. Only last night I was looking in the ads column of ME V2 of 1899 and kept seeing the name Whitney, now I know why. I will see what I can glean for you about the models. Noel.

                    Hi Noel,

Thanks again for the info, I appreciate your help with this, is it sensible to try compressed air to see if its working ? If so any particular pressure ?

                    Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian, Air will do, try 20 or 30psi 50 max. A drop of light oil on moving bit will help. Noel.
