Help Identification

Hello

I wonder if somebody might be able to help me identify this traction engine. It belonged to my grandfather and I have just been given it as a present. The problem is (A) I don't know what engine it is and need to get a part for it. (B) I need to know how to steam it. I think it runs on paraffin but don't have any idea how to do this.

Could you take some more photos of the firedoor / firebox areas please? The underside of the boiler and firebox and tender areas too. If the smokebox opens, please take a photo inside it (use a flashlight if needed for extra light. Extra detail is needed to make any comment about method of firing etc,

What part do you think you need?

What safety valves does the model have?

Safety valves and the boiler need a careful check before trying any sort of fire in the model, for your own safety. What is the max pressure noted on the pressure gauge?

What are the diameters of the wheels and the overall length?

Can't be sure from the photo, but it looks very much like the 3/4" scale Burrell type traction engine as sold by Bassett-Lowke. The gear train is a little unusual to my mind and is identical to the catalogue photo. The boiler is listed as being copper, water tube type, spirit fired.

I have a copy of their model catalogue circa 1958-60 where this is listed as a finished model complete with instructions and accessories for running priced at £136. Castings and materials are also listed with eye watering prices, for example cylinder set priced 8s 6d (42 1/2p). Seems silly money to us nowadays but then what was the average wage then? I'm sure it will be in proportion.

Hi James,

Looks like you have something rather special there. A copper boiler should still be safe to steam, if it passes a pressure test.

I think Jason nailed it – it certainly looks like Bassett Lowke's.

What part or parts do you think are missing?
