To the collective wisdom, I am seeking gear train info for cutting 32 and 40tpi threads for a imperial Myford 254S that I bought 13 years ago in mint condition. The hand book makes no mention of 32 or 40 tpi so I contacted Myford UK and they said, "no idea, we stopped making the 254 a long time ago, go ask the ME groups". That surprised me but I suppose the knowledge is lost over the years. I am sure some out there knows the details of the gears required for cutting 32 and 40 tpi. It is for my ME interests. https://www.flickr.com/photos/llewellyncustombicycles/albums/72157681626418076

What an attitude. Clearly they don’t care about their customer base! I’m surprised they get return customers for any of their lathe parts for any of their lathes, etc, if they treat their customers like that.

However there is usually two sides to a story. I await an alternative recollection of your conversation with myford UK.

At the same time, the 254 was designed and produced much later than the rest of their products (the whole ‘ML’ series). Everything since is simply sourced from outside manufacturers, I expect. The new ‘myford’ is (I assume) a completely new company simply rebadged with a well known company name that went down the drain years ago. A bit like some of the car marques, such as MG?

I would have thought the imperial 254S could do those pitches, the 254 can, what is shown on the chart?

This shows a 254 chart for imperial machine, may be worth putting your knobs in those positions and then put a dti against the carriage and see how far it moves per turn of the spindle.

Failing that post a photo of your chart and the train to the gearbox and then we may be able to work out what changes to the gearbox input are required

Looking at Myford's spares page the replacement chart for the 254S shows 32 & 40 tpi so try those knob positions assuming they are not using generic photos.

Just looked at your album and my collective wisdom says there is a photo which shows enough of the thread chart on your own lathe to see it is the same as the ones I have linked to above and 32tpi is clearly visible.

                  Farkkikng hell I am dim

Page 12 of the 254 manual does mention the train that should be the one to do it.

I best go back to preschool.

Suitably embarrassed, so I will crawl away and not bother any one any more and drift off into my insignificance

                  Ciao

Do disappear so soon you (both?) have some nice work in that album.

Naw, don't do that. Happens to me all the time. Few months ago I bought an expensive selection of tiny SMD oscillator chips and carefully put them in an envelope for safe storage. Can't find them despite three serious CSI-style searches.

Pretty sure the envelope hasn't been stolen by elves. I've forgotten where I put it, and it might just as well have fallen through an inter-dimensional wormhole. The project has ground to a halt!

One day I'll come across the envelope while looking for something else. It will be in plain view…

                      sad

Stupid thing is Dave, when you find them, you will remember putting them there.

Steve. P.S happens all the time here.
