I don't know if this is the right place to air this problem but it is the last resort!!!

I have subscribed to a magazine 3d create and print, I thought that it would be a good way of learning the art of 3d printing , magazine required me to download sketchupmake programme , I can not do this as I have malware loaded on to my computer (twice) I have to do a factory reset twice , I have been to sketchupmake and to the publishers to no avail, can any one help with this

          Danny,

          That's rather worrying

Are you downloading directly from the Trimble SketchUp website ?

I got my emial returned from the magazine and I could get any sense from the forums at sketchup and nothing at all from sketchup themselves

                Hi,

What I'd suggest as a first step is to register with The Motley Fool, UK (www.fool.co.uk), and then ask for help in cleaning your machine via this forum "Computer, Help With This Blasted". There are some very knowledgeable people on that board. It will probably mean doing something like getting into Safe mode, then downloading and running Malwarebytes or similar to clean your computer. Once cleaned, you will be advised to use a good anti-virus and firewall of which there a few free versions available for home use.

Don't be put off by the fact that this is a financial site, just navigate via Boards, Boards Help & Guides, Boards A-Z and then step down the listing to Computer, Help With This Blasted where you will be able to post your question after you have registered. You will need pseudonym to register, and when posting your question, it will be helpful to provide details such as computer type, make, etc, Windows version, any anti-virus etc plus what is happening.

I would also suggest that once clean, you should perhaps try downloading SketchUp from a different site. I don't know where, but I'm reasonably sure there will be one somewhere.

I assume, by the way, that you are using a PC and a version of Windows.

                Best of luck,

                Peter G. Shaw

Danny, I've just downloaded the software and the site didn't flag up any problems, I also scanned the .exe file and it was clean, perhaps you've picked up something previously that's infecting programme files!

If your 'system reset' was by using 'system restore' (assuming you're using windows), then an infection could well be in your restore files, they'll just keep perpetuating everytime you install them!
Periodically when my computer has enjoyed a few problem free re-boots, I delete all the restore points and set a new one, they take up a huge amount of storage space anyway!

As others have suggested, use an antimalware programme to scan and clean your pc, Malwarebytes Antimalware, and Superantispyware are free, they've been around a long time and well worth having!
Would also be worth installing and running a rootkit scanner, plenty of good freebies out there!

                  John.

Not a criticism in any way but why do you end every sentence with an exclamation mark?

Actually Danny, I just have and it’s even stevens, ‘5 all’ to us both by my reckoning, and I see no reason why my exclamation marks should be singled out for criticism when yours are not, at least I used single units where yours were multiple!
Lambton, I think you need to get out more and get a life if all you have to do is pick holes in postings made by others who have spent their valuable time trying to help others, I at least offered help and advice, where so far, you’ve offered bugger all except criticism, and yes it was! (Exclamation mark)!

Why so vitriolic? Obviously I have inadvertently hit a sensitive spot which provoked your quite rude response.

As I stated in my post no criticism in anyway. I am just curious what you trying to show by using an exclamation mark at the end of each sentence.

Lambton, Not vitriolic at all, just to the point, I personally have far better things to do in my life than waste it by picking holes in postings made by other members, and I certainly wouldn’t attempt to embarrass them on forum by doing so as you did, I simply made the point that perhaps you should have more important things in your life too!
Why did I use exclamation marks, I should have I was thought it obvious, perhaps you should also ask the OP why he did so too …. and why in duplicate and triplicate, or come to that, why any members here use them at all!

I do just wonder how many of the unseen numbers of readers of these pages are put off replying to posts precisely because of unnecessary attacks of grammar policing such as yours, and how many are dissuaded from getting stuck into model engineering because of it!
I personally have far bigger issues with Americanised spellcheckers (which in this case fires up ‘corrected spelling’ with a ‘Z’ and hyphen respectively), but I just ignore it and carry on regardless, perhaps you should waste less of you life doing the same!

Danny, just to get this thread back on track, the two links below will take you to free downloads of each programme, install and update both then run full scans on your computer,
Unlike anti-virus programmes, you can keep these two on your computer, they reside happily together whereas two anti-virus programmes won’t.

Good luck with it, I’m done here!

I may not be alone here but sometimes it seems individuals have trouble with individuals …not what they say ( or write).

Now back to the op point

I like trendmicro’s “housecall”..as a antivirus first check ( even with good anti virus and cautious habits).

As to thimbles download page for sketchup…first decide language then 64 vs 32 bit then “make” vs ” pro” then 2014 vs2015

….thusly more than a few options.
                                          Me , I use English ,2014 ,MAKE

Although prompted to upgrade to 2015 …2015 won’t work on my XP COMPUTER

                                          Best of luck

Whatever happened to backups? AV programs have their place but restoring from a complete backup is arguably much more definitive in removing malware (and gives me at least a much warmer feeling). Routine backups are so easy to do in these days of USB drives and terrabyte HDs.

I also take the time to make a temporary backup before installing most new programs (particularly, as in this case, installed via a web download) or anything else that might be the least bit risky. In that case I usually do it to another HD on my computer.

(Some seem to think that Windows Restore does much the same thing. That's quite untrue – all it does is backup the registry – and a few other files – and roll it back on demand. If malware has been introduced in the meantime, it is most unlikely that it will be fixed).

                                              Backups…

Can I offer a futher layer of protection?…
I pull my pc hard disc..replace with minimal install on a different hd..use this “new” pc to scan the other hd..but since this pc is booted clean. the malware that might camouflage itself against a scan is exceedingly unlikely to be present. .and if that passes, the “working” hard disc this is returned to its rightful place…
