Hello to all, my name is David. I've been dipping into the ME forum for a while, have picked up a few tips and thought it was time to introduce myself. Actually this is my very first post to any forum!
I live in Emsworth, a small town on the south coast of England. I grew up in the Midlands and was fortunate to go to a school that encouraged handicrafts with excellent workshops for wood and metal. I made a Stuart-Turner 5A there, I even spent most of one summer holiday working on it! The workshop technicians were very experienced and capable, one was an ex. marine engineer. Once they found that I was genuinely interested in engineering, they were really helpful and I got to know them quite well. I probably learned more from them than from my 'O' level metalwork course.
My working life was spent in electronic engineering (military and satellite communications systems) with model engineering being more of an aspiration than a hobby. In the early days I built a Mini Marcos kit car and more recent projects have included restoring my grandparents' mantel clock and helping my son restore his 1920's Edison Bell Handephon portable gramophone.
Since taking early retirement I have been busier than ever with extensive home improvements but slowly I'm getting my workshop into shape. I have one of the early Cowells lathes and a Wabeco mill. One day I might get time to actually start a modelling project!
With the wealth of talent already here I doubt if I shall be able to contribute much to the forum but I'm sure I shall continue to learn from it.
Regards,
David
