Hi all, I'm a recently early retired mechanical engineer having spent almost 31 years with Ford Motor Company designing and developing engines (I was Chief Engineer for the DuraTorque range of diesel engines for many years). My workshop is almost exclusively woodwork based at present but I've found a corner in which my late fathers lathe can fit and intend to get back into metalwork after many years (my father taught metalwork at secondary school in the 60-70's and taught me as a teenager). The lathe is a Myford (Drummond) M Series long bed that my Dad reclaimed from a skip and rebuilt in the early 1970's. I'll post some pictures once I work out how to do so. I'd love to hear from anyone else out there who has one as they isn't much info on them I can find. Cheers,

      Mark

Hello Mark and welcome to the forum, lots of interesting questions and answers on here ! I am sort of "local" to you in the Lune valley near Lancaster.

Hi Mark welcome to the forum I have an M Type and if you need any information just ask. Pictures help if you can, to sort out problems. What sort of things are you interested in.

Hello Mark, there is a lot of help available on the forum. What aspect of engineering interests you?

Thank you all for your kind words. Great to have joined such a friendly and knowledgable group! I've got some small bits and pieces lined up mainly jig type fixtures for woodworking. However I expect to try my hand at something more substantial once I've got to grips with the M Type, at which point I'll no doubt come back looking for advice. The only question I have right now (David) is whether you have managed to acquire or make a quick change tool post? The standard "Norman Patent" design I recall being very fiddly to get the correct tool height. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the forum Mark. I live in Kendal and have established my workshop behind my house. I have an Aciera F3 mill and have just installed my pride and joy, a Hardinge HLV lathe. You are welcome to call in.

                      Hi Mark I have fitted a Dixon type from Myford.toolpost 1 (1).jpg

I removed the old tool post and machined a diamiter to suit location on toolpost then drilled and tapped for bolt.

Thanks David, your mod looks exactly what I need although not sure how to get over the hurdle of needing to machine the machine that machines? What was your solution? Did your post look like the attached? It looks like its threaded 1/2"BSW so not compatible with your M10 fixings?

A possible solution would be to find someone locally with suitable machines! How local is Kendal to you?

My lathe was just like yours and the post was only drilled part way down. I just hacksawed the post down and got a friend to machine the post base and tap the hole through. The hole in the toolpost was smaller than the location diamiter so he also milled that to size for me.
