        Hello everyone!

Just realized I forgot to introduce myself.

I'm a Russian guy, used to live in Thailand, and currently living in Luxembourg. I work here as a software developer. For a long time I am into motorbikes (so far only enduro/dual-sport) and mountain biking. For many years already I'm doing all the maintenance myself, and many times I wished I had a lathe and a mill for making parts and accessories.

I am living in an apartment, so my "workshop" is a 3×3 m cellar, which also doubles as a storage space for house things, camping gear and my wife's stuff. I'm also into woodworking (hand tools mostly, I have a cordless drill and the smallish Bosch drill press) so that takes space as well. I'd like to make tools by myself, too. Recently I figured I can find a space for a small lathe, so a Hobbymat MD65 from UK recently arrived! I'm very excited about it! I really like the Workshop Practice book series, and am planning to follow the lathe books from the series to learn how to use my lathe.

I found this forum to be very friendly, helpful and well-suited to hobby (as opposed to professional) machinists, so I joined (and also subscribed to MEW magazine).

        Cheers everyone!

Welcome Gene to this wonderful site. If you have any questions you have but to ask, and remember, there are no silly questions, just occasionally, silly answers ( but of course, not on this site)

            Brian (from England).

Dobra dien Gene. Welcome to the site. There are quite a few people on this site that are into Motor cycles as well as Model Engineering and t am sure you will find plenty of good advice you need it.

I had then pleasure of working in Maykop (Adegaya) for a couple of years but during my time there

I never met anybody that was into Model Engineering.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Bob, I've never been to Maykop (or the immediate surroundings), I spent many summer vacations in Crimea, though. What kind of job did you do there? Did you do some skiing as well?

                    Hello Gene,

I worked for a joint Anglo Russian Venture in the Oil & Gas industry. We were repairing some old Gas wells that had stopped producing and restoring the field back to working order. The British company was JKX petroleum and the Russian parent company was yuzgazenergie. My job there was Drilling Coordinator, basically I was JKX's eyes on the job.

My normal job was Drilling Supervisor and I worked on all different types of drilling rig from small workover rigs to twin Derrick HydraulicOffshore rigs with D.P. Positioning.

                      Gene,

I forgot to add that Maykop was a lovely city to work in. We were based there even though the rigs were about 100Km north near the small vilages of Dondukovsokoye and Koshekable. The Caucasus mountains were only 40Km or so south and were very beautiful, I made several trips to the mountains with the guys from work at weekends.

In summer time the weather was lovely though somewhat hot in July with temperatures over 40 degrees in July common.

                        An impressive job, Bob.

Sounds like you had quite a good time in Russia

                          Welcome!

Lots of help and advice, as well as much of interest on here.

there is always something of interest and to learn on the Forum.

There will be things where you can help and increase our knowledge.

With a lathe, your horizons will greatly widen. Lots of jobs which were impossible, or imprecise will now be possible,

And many of which you have not yet thought!

                          Enjoy yourself.

                          Howard

Thanks Howard. This is exactly what I expect from my new (old) lathe Appreciate your welcome.
