      Hello.

I have just joined the site.

Have a Smart and Brown SAB lathe (without gearbox) which I am getting back to its best. It gets me out of the house and gives me a focus !

I have used it to make parts for tractor restorations.

Welcome along Nick, from a motorcycle tinkerer that used to have a TE20 Grey Fergie.

              Thank you both.

I enjoyed manufacturing the worn hydraulic parts of my John Deere 955 utility tractor – it was made by Yanmar, under license to John Deere. Lovely piece of kit.

Before that, I returned a 1976 Roper garden tractor back to working life, for a family member living in France. The Briggs and Stratton twin cylinder motor needed me to engineer some crank bearing parts. Its still working to this day.

I now have thoughts of a steam engine to power a small launch (big bigger than a rowing boat). But thats for another day.

Hi Nick – I hope you have deep pockets. Making the steam engine is low cost. Add to that the boiler cost, then a hull with a bronze propeller, Oh and a trailer to put it on to and a car to tow it with – might as well add a river licence and Boat Safety Scheme inspection. Then there is the boiler test and insurance. I started on a similar project, made the engine and after some time decided to sell the engine and follow a different project making a loco.

                  Similar problems though !

                  Bob

                    Welcome to the forum Nick.

If you want to post photographs the forum's software is a little convoluted. The method is described here <link>

Also, the forums built-in search bar top-right is a bit dumb. There's a much better search box (using Google) a little way down the 'Home' page.
