          Welcome, Tom … and thanks for the 'introductory offer'

          Being in Cheshire, it's unlikely I will ever use you; but I'm sure the locals will.

            Welcome along Tom, if you where closer some welding lessons would be great but alas I am Midlands based. Do you have machinery ? Ask away if you do and need to know anything, lots of experience on here.

                  Welcome to the forum Tom. Could be useful, I need all the help I can get with welding. embarrassed

                  I used to live in Farnborough, in the mid 70s when I was starting my student engineer course at RAE. I lived in the RAE hostel, opposite what now appears to be the Holiday Inn on the Lynchford Road roundabout. It looks like the RAE hostel is still there? Amazing if it is, as I understand it was WW1 vintage. In even in the mid 70s we still had 5A round pin mains plugs in the rooms. I was the third generation at Farnborough; my father started his apprenticeship at RAE in 1940, and my grandfather worked there with Geoffrey de Havilland pre WW1.

                  PS: Of course I assume you mean Farnborough Hants, not Kent?

                        Welcome Tom;

                        I may drop you a line sometime as I have a Mig gasless welder & a stick welder box, both run off 13 amp plugs on the house wiring, both from Machine Mart, I can get by on stick welding, but am leary of the mig box pity you're quite some way off from me, I'm in Smoggieland ( Teesside ), still, again, welcome.

                        George.

                          I have a somewhat fuzzy recollection of drinking in the RAE social club. We went there for two reasons. One, the beer was rather cheaper than in the pubs. Two, on a Saturday night you were much less likely to be involved in a fracas involving squadies from one regiment insulting squadies from a different (and crudely disparaged) regiment. This often happened in the pubs on Lynchford Road, as the barracks were opposite and the pavement outside was plenty wide enough for a full blown punch up.

                            Nobody insulted the Paras, well able to look after themselves.
