Hi there, I'm another new member to this site although I've been lurking for a while now. Situated just outside Southend with the obligatory shed/workshop, I am the custodian of a 1943 South Bend lathe plus all the usual tools. Currently rebuilding a Bridgeport Series 1 mill, I have just purchased a Hofmann dividing head, a UHT-100.

Now comes the question, has anyone ever dismantled one of these devices and seen how the hydraulic lock mechanism actually works ?

I think, looking at the operational instructions, that there is a part missing. Mine is the one with 'square' indexable handles and they talk about a 'pressure bolt'. On the bottom of the part the handle screws onto there is a threaded hole where I presume this bolt fits – who knows!

Any information from this forum would be much appreciated as trying to get any from Hofmann is proving difficult.

      Regards, Andy

Welcome Andrew, I think there was a recent thread maybe earlier this year about the Hofmann dividing head so worth a search. I had a 1942 South Bend "Heavy Ten" for 45 years, changed it 5 years ago for something bigger/more modern to go with the Bridgeport mill.

Hello Andy, welcome to the forum.

Yes, as Chris says there was a recent discussion on the correct oil for the lock mechanism. Try teh google site search on the home page.

Thanks to all those that replied. I now know all about Hofmann oil and tapers etc. but am still in the dark about the 'workings' of the hydraulic lock. I'm trying to resist the urge to dismantle the thing so another call to BIF Hofmann in Notts. may be required. Will let y'all know how I get on.

                  Regards, Andy
