l've been viewing this site for over a year now and am in the process of acquiring machines for a hobby workshop I'm setting up to keep me busy during my retirement.

Find it frustrating that one needs to make a few posts to be able to see advertiser's contact details. Hopefully I'll be able to do that soon! Andrew

I'm interested in classic/vintage vehicles and old machinery. This site is a mine of information and I would like to meet similar minded people in the Ely area. I've recently moved here from Swansea..

Hi Andrew welcome to the forum what machinery do you have so far. Any help you need just ask on here and someone is likely to know.

              Hi Andrew!

              Welcome to East Anglia.

If you are thinking of joining a model Engineering Club, you would seem to have more than one option.

Being a member of Peterborough, I am biased but we are probably the nearest, (Don't be too worried about distance; we have members from as far as Boston) We recently ran our portable track at the Ely Model railway Club show at the Isle of Ely College.

Our members have a wide variety of interests, and so have an equally wide variety of skills, should you need help or advice. (Being a retired employee, i am a member of the Perkins Heritage Group, and occasionally go to Hereford to volunteer at The WaterWorks Museum, and others have interests in classic scooters, and classic cars; so you won't be alone)

Take a look at our website, to learn more about us, (next meeting will be July 2nd)

Other possible clubs are Cambridge, or St Neots, (Peterborough members have contacts there, as well as further afield such as Leicester, or Northampton)

You will already know that other posters have interests similar to yours, and the advice that is freely given.

Hope that this is some help

              Howard

Thanks David and Howard for the weelcome.

At the moment I have a small Chinese lathe similar to a Warco BV 20, and an old band saw. In Swansea I used to attend an adult education course at the Gower University. It wasn't a course in the true sense but it allowed one to undertake ones own projects using the university's workshop under the watchful eye of university technicians. Some of the people "attending" had been doing so for 30+ years! It was like a club with access to a well equipped workshop with knowledgeable people on hand. I've not been able to find anything like this in the Ely area. I'm aiming to get a knee type mill, but not as large as a Bridgeport and a shaper (just because of their simplicity and cheap tooling). At some stage I'll get a better lathe.

The info regarding "local" clubs is helpful, Howard, I'll certainly look at your club Web site.
