I’m a retired Design & Technology  teacher, with an interest in motorbikes, models, steam locomotives’s, 0 Gauge railway loco and wagon brass kit building, woodworking and 1940’s aircraft. I own an older Cowells lathe plus three 3d printers and have use of an Axminster SC4 lathe and a small milling machine.

I volunteer at the De Havilland aircraft museum in London Colney, Hertfordshire, UK where I am actively involved in the restoration of our 3 De Havilland DH 98 Mosquito aircraft. Much of the work I do involves repair and replacement of parts big and small and the use of my 3d printers to reproduce small parts that cannot easily or cost effectively be reproduced in metal.

Welcome Clive!   Lots of Model Engineering interest boxes ticked by your resume.  Please tell us more!  Must be a real buzz to work on a Mosquito, an exceptional aircraft in so many ways.

You’ve joined at an “amusing” moment in the Forum’s history.  The software has just been replaced, and the new version has several annoying bugs.   Not meant to be irritating, so please bear with us whilst repairs are done.   (If the forum was an aircraft, we’d be at 15,000′, with a man outside working on the port engine…)

Welcome Clive, loads of useful info and friedly advice here. With your background / experience hopefully you will also be able to contribute much to the forum. Amazing variety and depth of skills available here – you’ll be surprised as how quickly you can get a response / answer to a query on practically any subject. You can also enjoy some general humour and interesting ‘other’ topics in posts in the ‘Tea Room’ forum.

Just bear with the iffy forum operation at the moment, hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Lovely plane the Mossie, always had a soft spot for it myself. Are any / all that you are involved with restoring going to be airworthy eventually?

Thanks for your welcome.

Sadly none of our aircraft will ever fly again, being a wooden aircraft it’s the 80 year old glue that’s the problem. Avspecs in New Zealand are responsible for the bulk of those Mosquitoes currently flying. These are essentially new builds using parts from an original airframe plus new wings and fuselage and all are now based in the USA. The Heritage Hanger at Biggin Hill has commissioned Warren at Avspecs to build a new airframe for the UK. This is expected to be delivered in a few years time.
