      Hello,

I'm new to model engineering, apart from metalwork at school many years ago (although I'm pretty sure I still have the screwdriver that I made then!). I'm taking this up as a hobby but haven't bought any equipment yet, as I thought I'd attempt to learn some skills first! I work in Bristol so any courses will have to be in the evenings. If anyone has any recommendations for training events I'd be grateful.

      Regards,

      Andy R

Welcome Andy, I think the board has contributors from Bristol who can point you at local places. May I suggest a visit to a model engineering show to get some idea of what size appeals to you to make. Only then can you look at space requirements and budget for equipment. You will enjoy the hobby.

Thanks Chris, that's a really good suggestion. I'll start looking for shows to visit! Of course, the budget isn't entirely under my control, but that's another matter entirely!

            Cheers, Andy

Welcome, I'm sort of the opposite to yourself, I was messing around with Mamod and simple occilator engines, also have an interest in 32mm and 5" gauge locos, so I already have an idea of what i wanted to make. I bought a lathe from e-bay, a myford that came with a lot of tooling. The lathe needs some work, but should be ok for my needs. Plus it only set me back £300, and it was collected from near Bristol too. My point is you don't need to spend a fortune on tools, but it does need to be able to build what your wanting to build

                    Gents,

Thanks for your responses – the model exhibition looks like a good source of information – even just for browsing at this stage – and the Bristol Model Club also looks like an excellent place to start, so I can work out what to build.

                    Cheers,

                    Andy

Thanks, Neil. The more I investigate, the more I'm looking forward to putting a workshop together!

                        Cheers, Andy
