Hello, I have just joined the forums My name is Tom Scriven and I'm a Brummie now living near Aberdeen. I have had a love of steam locomotives since i was young, i have had a lifetime dream of building my own model but in reality the cost of a workshop has been beyond me. I did attempt a 3 1/2" Tich when I was my teens attanding a night class but eventually gave up. I now build scale models in wood.

      Sincerely

      Tom

          Welcome Tom,

Any plans to move into metal models in the future?

Some years ago I made a scale wooden model of a Ford 4610 3 cylinder Tractor with a tipping trailer for my nephew. It won a gold medal in a national woodworking show. One of my Mum & Dad's proudest moments.

            Hello Bo'sun

Thank you for the welcome. Truth is my wife and I cannot afford to buy a metal lathe. There are at present no evening classes in metalwork in either of the local schools. My only hope would be to find a model engineer in the area who would let me share his workshop maybe once a week, but It's hoping for a lot.

I have one metal engine a Wilesco Showmans Engine which I built from their kit, but to be honest I was really disappointed with It because to me It was neither a toy or a scale model and the gears were stamped out flat and the teeth bent at right angles. I also didn't like the pram type dished hubcaps which I replaced with proper ones from Forest Classics. I also bought a extension chimney and brackets for the canopy roof.

                Tom,

Welcome from another financially challenged steam enthusiast.

My own compromise are Stirling Engines, with a bit of imagination they can be mistaken for the steam variety but with the lower pressures involved, materials and equipment can be less of a financial burden.

I need to build stuff – to do that I need a lathe – idea build a lathe.

That's my problems sorted for a couple of years, Good Luck with yours.
