I've been lurking on here for a while now, but as I just recently finished my first actual model I thought I'd finally say Hi!

Like a number of recent new members I've also started with a Stuart 10V

And it seems to be running fine on compressed air….

So I've now made a start on an ME vertical boiler to get it running on actual steam.

Hi Mark. Welcome to the forum. The V10 looks great. Good luck on the boiler build. keep us in the loop on the build. Hope we see them running together when finished.

Hello Mark and welcome. That's looking really good, including the boiler.

IF you intend running in public then you'll need a boiler test and insurance. The best (and cheapest) is through a model engineering club and there is probably one near you. Otherwise, if you only run it for your own pleasure at home then no problem.

I'd only add to Brian's advice that if intending not to steam the engine in public, you still test the boiler to the normal code for your own reassurance. The instructions are thorough but are designed to ensure not only is the boiler safe to use, but the test itself is safe for it.

I did dither back and forward a bit about whether to wait until the lockdown is over so I could go and talk to the local club.
But as you mentioned, I realised that it's never likely to be steamed in public anyway, as I'm only building it for my own testing, and as project to get an idea of how much effort it is to build a boiler and if I really wanted to build a loco further down the line.
So I decided to just get on with it, and make sure I test it properly with a suitably calibrated pressuge gauge etc.

Interestingly, I didn't find flanging the plates, and getting them to fit, to be as difficult as I was expecting.
If anything it was making all the formers that was the most tedious part, along with having to clean up all the sawdust!

I've also made a few extra parts in the last couple of days since I took the original pictures…
