Hello I am an ex toolmaker (many years ago) with a hankering to get my hands dirty again, so I have just purchased although not had delivered a few old machines and loads of old tooling. They consist of an Elliot Victoria U2 mill, a Smart & Brown 1024 lathe, Elliot 10M shaper and a cylindrical grinder that I can find no information about, but it has loads of belts driving everything! This was a take everything or nothing deal so I have spent the last month clearing most of the lighter stuff <50kg. I have had to accept the sellers word for the working of all these as there is no 3phs power to the donor workshop any more. The heavy stuff has yet to be moved.

It will take a while for me to get up and running as my workshop has no 3 phase either, I would be grateful for any advice on VFDs as this seems to be the way to go these days. Also any PDFs of manuals etc for the above.

Until I get up and running there may not be much noise from this end, but feel free to throw any advice at me!

Hi Andy welcome to the forum. As a retired bookmaker myself it is hard not to have access to all that machinery so you have to get more flexible to marking things and try new things but it is rewarding to finnish a few things. Where are you based as it sometimes helps to tap local information but if you ask there is a wealth of knowledge on the forum.

Welcome Andy, that sounds like a fine collection of machinery, can I ask what you are hoping to do with it?

One of my first machines (many years ago) was 3 phase and I a bought a static converter to run it and another machine with no proplems. Can't help with VFDs but I'm sure somene more knowledgable will be along shortly.

              Hello Andy,

Welcome to the forum. We have an article on fitting a VFD lined up for MEW Issue 259, out in about five weeks or so (if you can wait that long!)

It's been written by someone from Transwave, who sell VFDs, so it is practical and to the point.

Thank you all for your welcome, this is the first forum I have joined let alone posted to.

If I could reply to all in order, Hi David i am based in Southampton & Poole, the shop will eventually be in Poole.

Brian the first job will be to strip down where necessary and make sure they are all working correctly, they are not all in good condition apart from the shaper which has seen little use, after that to be honest I'm not quite sure, I used to tune engines and also do a bit of gunsmithing so I guess the will be a queue of long lost friends with favours to start withwink.

Neil My plan is to have one inverter to run the whole workshop, one at a time of course, I am getting conflicting advice (from you tube) as to the amount of spare capacity needed, so I will be interested to read the article.

Ady, I should probably fit in thenwink

Hi Andy C, not too far away from you in Broadmayne just outside Dorchester, used to go to Greenslades by the bridge to deliver Scallops every evening!

If you are ever over this way drop in for a cuppa!

                    Regards,

                    Martin

                      Welcome!

Don't know if there is a Model Engineering Club in the Bournemouth area, but if there is, would suggest joining.

With your experience, you may be able to help them, and probably some of their experiences with running 3 Ph machines off Single Phase, supply sources, etc, may be of help to you; not to mention the social benefit of meeting like minds.

                        Hello Andy C,

                        Welcome to the forum.

Manuals can be had from Tony Griffiths splendidly helpful website that describes all manner of workshop machinery, well worth taking a look at. I don't know if he issues manual in pdf form but I bought my Elliot 10 book manual from him.

                          Welcome Andy,

There are couple of clubs in our area, Bournemouth at the littledown centre and Wimborne. I am just converting my Myford S7 to 3 phase with VFD from Transwave (Peter Moss was very helpful), set it up on the bench worked first time, the manual for the Jaguar CUB is available on line. PM me you want a copy.

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum, Do you have any pictures of the Cylindrical grinder or know the make. The old Studer OB grinders were belt drive to everything, if its one of those, I may be able to help with info.

Hi again what a welcome, thank you.

Martin from your post I deduce you were either a fishermen or diver? I used to dive myself but my neck injury has stopped that and my motorcycling. Thanks for the offer if I'm over that way I will PM you first.

I have been trawling through Tony Griffith's web site for info, also spent a while reading the thread Thor mentioned, unfortunately the U2 mill I have acquired is not in anything like the condition of the one in the thread, and from the pictures mine is a Mk1, but has a Bridgeport head cobbled onto it. It still has the old vertical head, horizontal parts and also a slotting head, but i don't know yet if they are functional as I had to pull them from the loft of the garage and they are all covered in rust and detritus. I will try to get this back to its original configuration as it looks a bit Heath Robinson

Graeme, that is the one, Studer, I couldn't for the life of me remember the name, looks like a manic cartoon octopus? are they any good? I have never come across one before. I have a box load of wheels for it.

At the moment I am based in the Southampton area while I rebuild my place in Poole, but when I move back I will check out the clubs you mentioned.

                                  Hi Andy,

I have a Studer OB in my workshop it's a good machine although I have had to modify mine as it had suffered some damage to the base casting and wheelhead drive so it now has a dedicated motor mounted on the wheelhead. I have manuals for it which I can either copy and send you or I scan and email you a PDF version, let me know which you prefer.

Is this the one you have?

Hi I have just uploaded pictures taken before I started clearing the old workshop where I bought these machines, can't quite sus out how to rotate the pictures though as they are the right way up on my laptop.

Graeme W yes that is it, you can see a photo in my album now, I would be grateful for any info you have please. PDF is probably easiest for you I will PM you my email.

                                    Cheers
