      Hi Guys,

Can you insert stainless steel helicoils into aluminium before an alocrom treatment?

      Thanks in advance

I suspect not but the people doing the anodising or whatever would know.

            Hi Jqmes

Alocrom is unaffected by steel, brass or copper inserts in the articles being processed

            extract from anochrome.com/ alocrom website

I suggest you thoroughly flush any threaded or insert holes after Alochrom treatment, I have found that salts do stay in the holes. I find on new parts for the instruments are often not cleansed of residues. Even finding small bits of metal when the holes are blown out. The problem is that these salts can make the fixing screws lock up and snap off on dismantling.

When I had to work for a living I vaguely remember putting the following note, or something like it on drawings of aluminium bits.

"Alodine/Alochrom prior to inserting thread inserts".

The reason was that whilst the insert was ok with the treatment, the tiny gaps between insert and parent metal could and would retain small quantities of the stuff. Similar to Clives comment above.

                  cheers

                  Bill
