I got out my optimus stove and thought I would wire brush off the rustfrom the trivit, however I dont know of a suitable high temp paint that will take direct flame contact….

Any suggestions? Its an Optimus no5, one of those very common brass paraffin pressure stoves.

Go to your local car acc shop. They do exhaust paint in many colours. It takes very high heat to destroy it.

Being picky they were never painted, later ones were plated.

And the plating would come off with use.

Paint to withstand direct flame? I wouldn't bother with anything that you can just paint on and let dry – but I'd be interested to know if exhaust paint does the job. Black oxidise (not rust). Red-hot dipped in oil; or develop that thin brown rust (not loose) and boil in tanninic acid ( old teabags). Maybe Zeebrite 'black lead'.

The trivet on my cooker is black 'stove' enamel… I guess a kiln was involved in the application.

I bought an Optimus stove new in the 80s when I first went camping under my own steam. The 'hob' plate was painted – a goldish colour IIRC. The paint didn't last 5 minutes once the stove was lit.

If you have not already found it, there is at least one forum dedicated to these things – https://classiccampstoves.com/

I'm pretty sure that the enamel on the tops of Tilley lamps is kiln fired… a pity because I think you can only get black ones now but my older lamp has a brick red one that is somewhat rust eaten.

                    Stove Enamel maybe?

As suggested, I'd leave the oxidized finish. My Monitor and Optimus stoves have been like it for as long as I can remember and still function OK.

I think the cause of the orange rust is due to the water vapour (plus carbon dioxide) from the paraffin I am sure other camp stoves such as a butane or solid fuel dont decay so much.

Any chemists feel free to comment on the combustion charactoristics…

I bought a stove to add to my collection of 130+ and it was a brand new one from the 70's/80's and it had a goldish colour trivet which I believe is nickel plating.

Could have been – IIRC it just looked like a fairly carelessly done spray job but it might have been plated. Once used the trivet just looked sooty and rusty though so I whatever it was seems intended just to make it look nice before it leaves the shop.
