Anyone have any advice on using a link belt for the headstock drive on a ML7. Any preference of brand or where to purchase ? Thanks for any info. Craig

            Hi Craig

Follow Richards link – it says it all!
I changed the belt on my S7 a while ago and the transformation in smoothness and noise levels was amazing. I got mine from Tony Griffiths at http://www.lathes.co.uk/ but they are available at lots of places. As RDG are now owners of the Myford name maybe their offering should be considered?

            Regards

              Norman,

Did you just replace the headstock belt, or did you do the motor one as well?

I’d thought a lot of the noise on my S7 was coming from the layshaft needle rollers (which had previously been greased, rather than oiled) and was “getting around to” replacing them – hence my query.

Sounds (no pun intended) like it might be worth my changing the belt first and seeing whether that brings the noise level down somewhat.

              Regards Tom

                  Hi Tom

No it was just the motor belt I changed – the headstock belt is still quite OK. In the past the higher speed range was very noisy and the top speed quite frightening! Changing that belt has instantly made all speeds quiet and smooth as silk. I think that, when the time comes to replace the headstock belt, there is no contest. I have no wish to dimantle the headstock unless absolutely necessary!

                  Regards

Thanks fellas for the info and advice. I will find a source over here (Ontario, Canada) and post results. Also I should correct my initial post and identify my lathe as a Super 7, not ML7.
My bad. I’ve been reading too many posts. Cheers Craig
