Just heard on Radio 4 end of midday news that the millennials have hijacked the word “manifest” to use instead of “plan” like other words such as ‘curate’ is taken out of place to further reduce clarity of expression. From the optics of the piece I don’t think either speaker knows the engineer’s use of the word.

(yes I know but using ‘optics’ is typical of what they do now and I couldn’t think of another more suitable word to use out of place)

I love the abuse of the word Optics for what is so often an Audio experience 🙂

… not digging at you Bazyle, just broadening the discussion.

Aren’t optics associated with spiritual experiences?

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Yes I heard the woman saying she manifested her wish for a book deal and it just came to her with no pitching or advertising.  She basically put the idea out there and the universe did its thing. She magnetised the book deal to herself…..</p>
              Absolutely crackers. Lol.

Yes – I heard if not the same then another report on this. Apparently some pop singer called Dua Lipa (I call her “two Beers” but would not recognise her if I heard her) is one of those to blame for this semi-illiterate stupidity, along with assorted Pseuds’ Corner types like that authoress who must have over-dosed on iron tablets.

I think “to manifest” was used as a verb by 19C mediums, to describe the “ghosts” appearing as they conjured in their “seances”.

It is also a noun, for the register of cargo on a ship.

Two other malapropisms that lead to my bouts of shouting at the radio, are the supposed resonance and acoustic, instead of the reverberation and acoustics, of an auditorium or church.

While as far as I am concerned I am not content that the material I read on a screen or hear in a radio talk is the subject’s content (singular) – as used by the sort of people who also do not know that the word data is plural (so ” the data are…”).

                (As for calling a railway locomotive, a “train”…. )

A little ‘Googling’ soon returned this:

                  …which names the originator culprit

                  .

“Manifesting” is essentially willing what you want into existence, a concept based on the “law of attraction” (L.o.A.) invented by 19th century spiritualist, Phineas Quimby

No it definitely does not work, I’m still a balding worn out 80 year old

I think there might be something in it. Dua Lipa is Poggers!

I guess Manifesting starts before the plan in order to help develop a clear and detailed plan, but repeating it then helps to stay motivated. It is about being really clear on the end-goal and the rewards if you achieve the goal.

You do need some idea of an end goal to start though. I’m at a place where I can’t think of anything to manifest. I guess that process in millennial speak is ideation. Finding myself at that place is due to chronic low-level depression. Congnitive behavioural techniques, like manifestation, can be a way to stave it off

I have two methods for ideation at the moment:

                        1) Get down the workshop… something always happens. If this becomes difficult then I focus on how to make the workshop a more enticing environment. Temperature, air quality, organisation, space, light, sound, sustenance. Additional motivation can be gained by new tool purchases on Black Fridays.

                        2) Collect potential projects. I almost do the opposite of manifestation; I get an inkling of an idea, poorly thought out, and then collect some bits to start a project… or collect something that obviously needs work. Then, if I’m down the workshop, I can open my potential projects draw and pick one.

So I guess I wish I could Manifest but I’m recovering from too long in the rat race at the moment to find a start. Maybe I can get a self-help book deal.

Whoever this (allegedly) singer is I am not sure she’d really like my “Two Beers” (Dual IPA) appellation. While whatever “Poggers” might be intended as, it reads to me as a name suited to a pet guinea-pig…

I can’t be doing with all that (American?) slang and puffery – including artificially age-classifying people hence their supposed characteristics as “millennials” and the like, as if ‘Access’ database menu items.

Nor do I accept the cod-pyschology / sociology behind such rhubarb, for I have had to use clinical psychology in reality, with CBT, to overcome bouts of clinical depression.

I do still have odd spells of lost enthusiasm and inability to see the next step forwards, and its possible consequences,  on a complicated project. One approach I use there is to stop and turn to some other part of the project, or a different project entirely.

So I don’t believe in supposed concepts like “ideation” and “manifesting”. (Nor that gimmick called “Black Friday”!) I still leave these concoctions to the sort of New York pseudo-intellectuals whom programmes like Woman’s Hour fawn over.

My old boss always used to ‘preach’ that one should never believe what you were told and only half of what you were shown.

                            How prescient he was.
