      David might I suggest you try one of the new generation of Led Light globes as I found the pure white light they emit fantastic for reading ,although they are expensive once I fitted it and turned it on I felt the cost was justufied .

        I dont think its fair to compare a 50 watt halogen with a 1 or 2 watt LED. We have 8x8w LED's in the kitchen and it is very bright!….. Try comparing like with like, I would think a 50watt LED would give off ample light to read by.
