              Must be my setup.

I am using XP, Firefox etc but gradually coming to the conclusion that I need to change. I don’t want to but today I got a message on another website to update the Javascript. I cannot do that as the latest version says it needs a newer operating system.
              Does this website use Java?

                Hi Ian,

yes the site does use various javascript elements, and in particular the editor so an outdated version of javascript will impact on the site functionality in your browser.

javascript is only needed if you wish to post images otherwise you can turn off javascript (eg I always browse with it off) though there are some problems at top of page due to the choice of fixed sizes for some elements though these can be overridden in Firefox.

Remember that javascript (which is confusingly named as nothing to do with Java programming language) is a script language by which you allow some other person’s code to run on your computer – ok there may be some safeguards but generally malware needs javascript to be available do its damage

For the time being I have started using a second PC (Win 7 Firefox) to use this forum. Everything works as it should.

Out of interest I just flipped back to my XP machine which has the java thing updated but the editing window is still small and with the buttons missing etc. What is really weird is that the ARC advert is missing!!!

Its repeatably missing in that I have rebooted and its still not there. everything else looks normal. What I will do now is see if it reappears if I login on the XP machine (but that logs me out of this PC)

This post is from my XP PC.

Now logged in and no ACC advert!
The first thing at the top of the RH column is the red ‘My Friends’ bar.

                      Any suggestions!

I misspelt ARC and wanted to edit but cannot, hence this post

Try resetting your router. It sounds like a caching problem, and, given what you've tried already, the cause may not be on your XP box.

                              Ian,

Nothing has changed on the website, so I assume something has changed on your PC's setup.

Firefox has native Javascript support built in.

                                I quite agree Neil.

I just thought that the naked editing box and the missing adverts might have been seen by another user.

I might have to bite the bullet with XP but quite a bit of what I use wont run under Win 7 so I have been putting off changing.

…. and turned on by default and you can't simply turn it off by a change in <Options>. You have to go into <about: config> and change it there.

Personally, having JS (the script plugin not the moderator) turned on for this forum is minor issue. I need it turned on to do online banking.

Yes, but I think your Windows 7 machine is a new instance on the on the router and has its's own address cache.

I'm guessing the XP address cache in your router is partially corrupt, a theory you can easily disprove by resetting the router and not getting an improvement.

Right clicking on a page in Firefox opens up a menu with an 'Inspect Element' option. Clicking that will allow you to look at the web pages innards, which might reveal what's amiss.

You can switch off Javascript if you think it's security risk, but this is the percentage of websites that use it, so disabling may impact on you use of the web

You may be surprised. I have an ancient version of Corel Suite (10) which was fine on XP and W2000. It got a bit flaky under Vista and runs better on each subsequent version of Windows.

My CorelDraw is not as new as yours being version 6, however I rarely use it. I do use Acad 2005 which definitely wont run under 64bit Win 7. My plan is to move to Fusion 360 but so far not even managed to create a simple box at the right size!

I have just discovered some other funny goings on in my XP firefox PC so will do some investigating later.

I've got a 2001 version of Pro/Engineer which is still happily running on Win-8.1- 64bit (and Win-10, I think but I'd need to confirm that). And Eudora, which has been "dead" for over a decade just keeps going and going with every version of Windows to date. It doesn't understand some modern html and security certificate changes need extra effort (gmail changes them every week or two) but it's still the same friendly email client it always was.

Nothing brings back the ARC advert and its name does not appear if I look in the inspect element/page thing (which I dont understand but I can see lists of what appears in the various page sections)

Neil – the major use of Javascript is to insert 3rd party tracking code – eg for reasons never yet explained this site attempts (fails because I use request policy to block such) to insert a facebook tracker – even tries the dodge (now quite common) of inserting a special non visible 1 pixel tracker if you have javascript off – the other standard use (as also on this site) is to insert a google analytics tracker
