My neighbour has a 1 year old jack russel type dog

it was in the garden digging down to a armoured cable and then chewed through a 2.5mm 3 core swa cable fusing the supply.

no injuries sustained but why would it do it? It was 12 inches deep in a flower bed…can the dog sense something..it’s supplying a pond pump so no great load

It is in the dogs genes. could/nt dig garden without my Jack Russell digging soil that had been turned over.Stems from digging foxes out of their earths to make them bolt for the hounds to give chase. Very tough and fearless breed would tackle a fox head on underground.

Almost the perfect farmyard dog

6 foot stone walls in my area, a neighbours JR dog could climb them as he chased the local foxes

I would never get one, too mental

Make fabulous guard dogs

Dogs are no brighter than they should be….

As for cats…. Beyond analysis.

My workshop extends the width of the garden, part of a shed-roof feline highway along the terraced street. Goodness knows what a cat or perhaps two cats were up to on the roof above me, late this evening, but they certainly made me jump with the sudden crashing and banging!

Could there have been an ultrasonic hum from the cable, perhaps just pond pump resonating back?
Or coincidental to a mole tunnel?
Or something decomposing underground?
Some dogs just like digging.

My Airedale has dug a hole in the corner of the garden, half her hieght in depth, if she keeps going I will not have to dig much out to lay her to rest. What pzzles me is she digs and then pees there?

Re, the armoured cable. I was friends with a farmer and he kept chickens and pigs and had 3 phase power to his machinery, grain milling and boiling equipment for pig food.

The cables ran along the top of the walls and were run on a catenery btween buildings. he asked me one day to fit a new cable and showed me where the rats had taken off all the sheathing from the red,blue and yellow cables as they ran along the wall. This was evident as the rats droppings were all coloured!

Duly fitted new cables, armoured and thought to myself, job well done, except that a couple weeks later i saw that the rats had taken off the plastic outer sheathing and left bare the armoured wire! They would also go across the catenary wires to get from one building to another.

In we go with two Jack Russels, Oh boy, how they worked the rats. First night about 20 or so and this went on for months. There ssemed to be no end to them until the chickens and pigs were sold off, now there are no rats.

Many years ago we had a full pedigree Golden Retriever which I used to walk. The owner of what used to be a farm before being surrounded by housing used to have a Jack Russell which invariably came out to create havoc around my dog. One day, whilst being walked and at heel, my dog snapped, spun on the spot, gave one bark, and turned back to continue walking as if nothing untoward had happened. The Jack Russell, meanwhile turned tail and ran as fast as it could back into the farm buildings. Golden Retreiver 1, Jack Russell 0.

Dogs can be amazing in their abilities, think sniffer dogs for drugs etc. Not sure about them being able to bite though SWA cable though.

Well when the armouring wires are exposed over some length and the dog is chewing it the wires may bunch to one side and the dogs teeth are in the cable. My dog once bit into a cable (non armoured, H05VV-F) and got an electric shock. As much fear I had about my dogs life- as much I like it now, because after that day no cable was touched…

By the way, my boys girlfriend had rabbits. And of course they went into my workshop. Several cables ruined, but also the compressed air hose running behind the cupboards (PVC armoured) got a hole…

Had a pet rabbit that made short work of some bell-wire that was being used for an intercom…

My border terrier chewed through the armoured cable to my garage workshop. As Gerard mentioned above it chewed away enough outer plastic for the armour wires to move away and then it chewed into the conductor. I only found this out when my workshop electrics would trip when it rained.
