Perhaps it is not possible to have the chuck reverse its rotation?

      If it is, how?

You might get the mandrel and hence the chuck to reverse the direction of rotation.

Welcome to the forum I have no doubt you will get a raft of replies to your question.

I don't know the model but in essence lathe spindles are run in reverse by motor rotation. On single phase electrics that is done by starting the motor in the opposite direction to normal using the start winding wired appropriately.

3 Phase is easier, one of the normal run windings is swapped with it's neighbour and the motor will then start and run in reverse.

These things are usually done via a built in reversing switch

            Regards

            Brian.

              Hi Joe,

If your L5 has a screw on chuck (some L5 lathes have L00 taper) there is a chance you might unscrew the chuck if running in reverse. I assume you have a manual for the lathe? If not check here.

I fully agree with Thor's caution regarding screw on chucks, the Smart & Brown model A is screw threaded and the manual mentions only running at very slow speeds if using reverse. The one I use has been modified to positively lock 3 scroll chucks and a 4 jaw independent because of using lefthanded boring and internal threading tooling.

My L5 is screw on chuck – be very careful, even hitting the clutch-brake hard can send the chuck spinning off so reversing it is a definate no no.

My Taiwanese lathe has a screw on chuck, but the are two dogs that attach by capscrews to the back of the chuck and hook behind the flange to prevent the chuck unscrewing when run in reverse.

Would it be possible to incorporate something similar on your Harrison, to make it safe for reverse running.?

                    Howard.

My Chester lathe has two clamps to lock on the chuck, just like Howard,s. I dont understand why other makes dont have the same, it,s so simple.

PS, Nice reply from Brian Wood ,courteous as always.
