Hardinge lathe on fleabay

A hardinge toolroom lathe has popped up on Ebay for £1400 and it's in Sheffield.

Looks to be in very good condition.

I had set my heart on an HLV but private sellers are few & far between, dealers obviously want top dollar, that one is tempting.

Yeah it’s definitely been given a lick over, but at that age hardly surprising, don’t think i would buy without seeing first though.

The cateract style lathes are interesting historically, but not an HLV or HLV-H

Reduced due to fault . Bent leadscrew or half nut.

Even with problems with the leadscrew/ nut it's good value a friend had a new leadscrew made for his Colchester at £260 pounds so add that to the lathe ,good value, the taper turning is worth £250 on its own I purchased one some two years ago

Resurrecting the thread as there's on of these for sale on ebay at the moment, only scrap money, but it may well only be scrap as it's been dropped. damage looks to be limited to the leadscrew, the traverse wheel on the apron and the wheel on the cross slide.

It's only just up the road from me and i'm almost tempted but common sense tells me it will end up being a expensive paper weight. I'd imagine the spares are hard to come by.

Might be all right at the right price, ie pig in a poke price. And if you can transport it yourself without hiring specialists etc. Wonder if the bent leadscrew is the cross slide feedscrew where the handle has been smashed off? You could always part it out on eBay and make a profit if it turns out to be a dud. I imagine spares are not thick on the ground so prices would reflect that?

The Americans call them 'boat anchors' but it isn't too bad for an anchor! That will be sold no doubt maybe broken for spares or could be bought as a project, I'm sure spares if needed are freely available in the USA.

ha, yes, 'boat anchor' was what i was thinking. A cursory google failed to find any second hand parts available in the UK, so i suspect the bits needed may be hard to come by, though i would think if you broke it up, for the current price there's got to be a bit of profit in it, and if it could be fixed it would be a decent lathe for the money.

OTOH it's buying work, and i've got plenty of that already without buying more. There's some decent looking triumph lathes in an i bidder sale ending this week, a chipmaster and some triumph 2000s. will be a fair bit more expensive and further to go and collect but might be easier in the long run.

It doesn't look to be in worse condition than my HLV (no -H) was when I bought it. Probably better, since mine had no carriage drive motor and the apron gears, shafts and bearings, topslide and bed were all scrap. Ok it's a project, but if the buyer has the patience and skills it'll be well worth it.

 

The visible damage is easily correctible, including the bent leadscrew.
