      Gentlemen,
Last week I purchased off Ebay an Adept No.2. Bench, (hand operated) shaping machine. The operating handle is the only part that is not original. Does anyone have one of these machines from which they could supply me with the handle dimensions.

You can see the history and pictures of the machine here:-

      Page Title

This item had been in storeage for some 30 years and the owner had never used it. Apart from some chipping of the paintwork whe machine is as tight as the day it was made. At present the major parts are being bead blasted to remove the original paintwork.

I want to restore it to it’s original form and to use it. Any help with the operating handle dimensions would be gratefully received.

      Harry.

          Hi Harry
I sold one of those in 2005, I think it had the original handle and it was about 18″ long and did look as if it had just been made from a mild steel bar.

Picture doesnt show complete length but best I have.

            Hello Peter,

I had guessed the length to be about that size from pictures of it that I had seen. The current replacement is nearer 3′ long. That was a nice Adept no.1 you had. There isn’t half some competition for these machines when they come up on Ebay.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

            Regards,

I had a 2A years ago when I was an apprentice – it was jolly hard work,  and my mate drew up the drawings to motorise it in 1968 as an exam project. Sadly, we never motorised it, and I sold it for £30.  As I remember,  the handle was about 24 inches long.

The handle on mine Harry is 24″ long x 1″ wide x 3/8ths” thick – with the ‘pulling end’ slightly shaped (rounded edges) to give a better grip/handle for about 6″.

                  Robert and Ian,

Thank you both for your input, it is much appreciated.

I’ll cut mine to the correct length and shape the handle end. I’m obliged to you both.

                  Regards,

                      Hello William,

Over the years I have seen these shapers (in pictures) in a variety of colours. The one I bought recently was in black, but I have seen then in blue, red and green.

I’m refinishing mine in the old LNER (London and North Eastern Railway) green, it’s a colour I like, it doesn’t match anything else in my workshop, but what the hell. lol. I may repaint some of my other machine tools to match it.

Whatever colour you paint yours, I doubt it will decrease it’s value.

                      Harry

I’m partly colour blind but I think my Super Adept lathe is green if that helps. Ian S C

Assuming mine is still in the original paintwork William – a very pale green

                              Hello Otley,

That’s very generous of you sir, however, I have made a replacement with the correct dimensions provided by others. All it needs now is slight polishing and bolting in position.

I thank you kindly for your offer though.

                              Regards,
